In the very remote jungle of central Papua New Guinea live the Hewa tribal people. The life of the Hewa includes murderous raids, payback killings and fearful superstitions rising from terror of jungle spirits. Helpless to defend themselves from continual violence, sickness, and death, they hear about pale faced foreigners who may be able to help them. They send frequent requests asking for help, only to be told there is no one available to live with them. Finally help arrived, but it was not what they had expected. The story is full of twists and turns that will leave you breathless and hungry for more.
Jonathan and Susan Kopf have lived in the rugged mountains of Papua New Guinea since 2000. They spent several years learning the language and culture of the remote Hewa and have now devoted their lives to translating the New Testament into their language, teaching them the message of the Bible, and assisting them in their struggle for survival in a changing world. Though the names of some of the people have been altered, the book is based on actual events that have been witnessed by the author or told to him by the native people.

Deceptive Darkness

This is a good book showing the depth of darkness and deception of a people group isolated from truth, bound by deceptive beliefs and separated from unconditional love. Please read it!
As one of the pilots who flew in support of this work I can say that we are amazed at what God is doing among the Hewa people! We have prayed for them and with them to see God answer.
Jonathan and Keith as well as their families are some of most gracious, kind and self-sacrificing people I know. It was a pleasure to serve them.
Before the Gospel was presented Jonathan was in the co-pilot seat diligently memorizing vocabulary, not taking the time to look out the window and enjoy the view. Curious, I asked several questions about the state of the work. He set aside is memorization for a few moments to answer my questions. He said, "My being here is like putting your finger in a bucket of water and pulling it out to look for a hole. My presence will have no effect at all unless God does something here." Well I can say that God has done some very marvelous things! I can hardly wait for the sequel! Check out some of the videos at ntm.org to see some of the setting and testimonies.
The book is good, insightful. It helped me to get more information about what was happening on the other end.

Outstanding Honesty

Kopf doesn't hold back. I expected a sensational read about interactions with one of the most remote people groups left in the 21st century. Instead I felt like I got to live with the Hewa people in Papua New Guinea.

So encouraged by this book!

Just finished reading "Canopy of Darkness". It was by far one of the best books I've read in a while!
I was immediately intrigued, and once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.
It is the story of missionaries venturing to the utterly remote villages in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. This book is incredibly raw, and at the end, I felt incredibly encouraged and uplifted.
What an insight and perspective changer into and of the bigger picture of life.
This book totally draws you out of your comforts of home, and makes you feel like you can see a small glimpse of a certain reality.
Thank you so-o much Jonathan Kopf for writing this book. I can't wait to read it's sequel, and will continue to lift your family, and the Hewa people up in prayer.
