Above average fantasy novella

This is one of a multitude of Jack Vance novellas. This one is notable for being one of the better ones (but not as good as The Last Castle or The Narrow Land). It is also notable for being one of his relatively few fantasy works. In spite of being most famous for The Dying Earth and Lyonesse, Vance wrote much more SF than fantasy, so fans might be extra-interested in this yarn. It also has a more military Dragon Masters feel to it, as opposed to his usual wandering outsider fare.
I am grateful for the pricing on most of the Vance Kindle editions. I carped a little at Five Gold Bands, Frietzke's Turn, and some of the weaker/shorter novellas. I guess five bucks is about fair for an above-average novella, but I hasten to point out that you get a larger portion with better quality short fiction if you pick up either the Moon Moth or the Chateau D'If collections.
Once you've read all the top-notch Jack Vance, you'll find yourself craving more. No other author will meet that need, so you'll start working your way through the second-tier material, and this is one of the books you'll read at that point. Finally, you'll end up like me and read every scrap you can find, even if it's The Rapparee.
