She discusses relevant medical and philosophical theories about the female body; considers Greek ideas about purity, pollution, and ritual purification; and examines the cult of Artemis in detail. Her nuanced study demonstrates the social contribution of women's rituals to the sustenance of the polis and the identity of its people.

Peter E. Bondanella is Professor of Italian Emeritus at Indiana University, an NEH Younger Humanist and Senior Fellow, and the author of Machiavelli and the Art of Renaissance History and Francesco Guiccardini.

Mark Musa is Professor of Italian Emeritus at Indiana University and a Guggenheim Fellow. He has translated Dante’s Divine Comedy and La Vita Nuova and is the author of Advent at the Gates: Dante’s Comedy.

In-depth review: 1977 Norton Critical Edition

The first baby steps in Italian prose, away from the mystical, the ascetic, the heavenly, the Papacy towards the sensuous, the sexual, the clever, and the bourgeoisie, were taken by Boccaccio in his hundred tales, Decameron. These lively (if sometimes awkward or hesitantly told) stories reveal everyday men--and many women, at last--keeping up appearances, fooling priests and potentates, and striving to express their fleshly, calculating, and grasping desires. Narrated by seven young ladies and three gentlemen fleeing Florence during the Black Plague of 1348, these clever schemers may succeed or fail, but their ambitions energize these tales. They promote the Renaissance humanist, eager to hear from his peers.

Twenty-one representative novelle were chosen for a 1977 Norton Critical Edition; the somewhat ironically surnamed Francisco De Sanctis sums up their appeal as human comedy: "The flesh entertains itself at the expense of the spirit." Considered in the triad if below Dante, we get the next two conversing, via the letters of Petrarch, who chides his old friend Boccaccio for recanting (I wonder if Chaucer knew this when he abandoned his frame-tale scheme for his Canterbury project?) and threatening in a state of guilt to burn his manuscripts. Colleagues tended in their biographical accounts to admire not these "new" tales so much as his more edifying ones, inspired by the classics.

Later, scholars weigh in. Seeing this was issued in 1977, I'd reckon as with other Norton Critical Editions (yes, this has a few footnotes if not many), that a revision with some newer scholarship might enhance its value. As to what's in this version, I sympathize intuitively with literary historian Ugo Foscolo, who advances the idea of Boccaccio separating his concerns from Church and urging the expression of the female, the mercantile, even the roguish voices, along with those of the elite and the clerics who had long dominated the conversation of who should act how, in fact as well as fable. Erich Auerbach follows with an excerpt from Mimesis analyzing stylistic variety, and Aldo Scaglione takes on nature and love as the concerns supplanting those of piety and renunciation. Wayne Booth explains how Boccaccio tries out both telling and showing as a narrator early in the evolution of a longer set of fictional tales.

Similarly, Tzvetan Todorov as to structure and Robert Clements as to collections illustrate the sorting process within stories and among them. Marga Cottino-Jones argues how patient Griselda's account uses the Christian figurative mode to elevate her status, and how despite however moderns react, for the audience of Boccaccio, such a presence resonated with Christ-like ideals of endurance and sacrifice. Ben Lawton defends Pasolini's 1971 film as true to some of the spirit of the source, even as it skips from a medieval time and place to a jarringly modern one, if but two-thirds of a bold triptych.

Translators Mark Musa and Peter Bondanella, who later published a Signet edition of all hundred stories, conclude by pointing to the meaning of them all. Beyond the purported audience of "idle ladies," the impact of the Decameron reverberates in themes of love, intelligence, and fortune. Instead of God's will governing this universe, men and women seek to procure not heavenly but earthly fame.

Left me wanting more ...

Boccaccio's _Decameron_ is a collection of 100 tales: 10 stories told by 10 refugees from the Black Death. This collection only includes 21 of them, which was a disappointment - I had hoped to read all 100. (My mistake for not paying closer attention.) With that said, the selections included were fantastic and certainly whetted my appetite for more.

The literary criticism of the stories was of only passing interest, but did provide some depth to my understanding of the stories, the author and the times.

For those seeking a taste of the Decameron, I highly recommend it. If, like me you were looking for the entire collection, look elsewhere. Regardless, a very worthwhile read.

'The Decameron' is a series of 100 stories, ten stories told each night by ten different people who had left the city for a country sojourn to escape a time of plague. Giovanni Boccaccio, an Italian author known as part of the founding trinity of Italian literature (the others are Dante and Petrarca), was born in 1313, and produced most of his literary works by his mid-30s. The ten characters in 'The Decameron' were all young people, much like Boccaccio, and the passions, interests and issues of his own age is illustrated among these folk -- Boccaccio's possibly-fictitious love, Fiammetta, is similarly one of the characters here.

This edition by Norton does not include all 100 stories, but rather 21 selected stories, many of the more popular ones, selected by professors Mark Musa and Peter Bondanella (professors at my university when I was there 20 years ago), who are also known for their editing and translation of works by Dante and Machiavelli. There are selections from each 'day' (set of 10 stories), as well as a few of the extra texts, such as a prologue, introduction, and overall conclusion by Boccaccio. These are edited to fit together, as Boccaccio's tales often would wind from one story to the next, making a selection of disconnected stories difficult in transition without editing.

There are also two different kinds of critical analytical materials included in this Norton Critical Edition. The first includes personal correspondence samples, particularly between Boccaccio and Petrarca; these date even after the writing of 'The Decameron', showing the interest and reactions. These materials include other contemporary and closely-following generations' reactions and influences from 'The Decameron'.

The second part of the critical materials includes more modern scholarship and analysis. These deal with history, philology, philosophy, and other literary criticism topics (structuralism, formalism, rhetoric, etc.). It also includes a study of a film interpretation of 'The Decameron', filmed by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

While purists will probably be disappointed with the abridgement of the text, the essays deal with the whole of the work of 'The Decameron'. Hopefully those who read the stories here will be motivated to continue their reading with a full-copy edition of 'The Decameron'. The translations are interesting and lively, and the stories continue to make connections with audiences today.

Important book, important topic.

I read this book in basically one sitting. It was a page-turner, in that I had to keep reading to find out how it would end. "End" is a funny word for the ending because the author Baby Halder is still so young with a long life ahead of her. This is a phenomenal book, not just because it tells Baby's story, but because it tells a story that millions of women around the world share. And we need to hear this story. And what makes it more phenomenal is that the author was able to break free from abuse and poverty to write an internationally published book and share her story of a life less ordinary.

I spent much of the book wondering how I could've dealt with the loss of my mother or the tolerated murder of my sister or the unimagineable thought of my 12 year old daughter getting married and having children, or if I would've had the courage to get on a train with my children and nothing more to try to find a better life.

An issue with the writing in this book is that the author frequently switches from 1st to 3rd person, but I looked at it like less of a grammatical error and more of the author speaking in 3rd person when the topic was very painful. I really highly recomend this book.

Really wanted to love this novel but couldnt even finish it.....

I feel horrible for giving this book a bad rating, but I want to be as honest as possible with my reviews. I really wanted to love this book, for the author's life and everything she had to endure is truly remarkable. I also thought this would be an important book to read as a woman, due to the main theme of how women are treated in other parts of the world. I just had a very hard time reading it because it was so poorly written, so choppy and confusing at times (i.e., going from one type of narrative to another - writing in first person to writing about herself in the third person; confusing dialogue; and paragraphs that seemed to end at times without continuing the thought or story. While I acknowledge how amazing it is for someone who came from such a difficult upbringing and little education to have written a novel that not only got published, but is beloved in so many countries, I wish there was a lot more editing, so that her story could have been told more fluidly, as it truly is a story to be told and shared with the world. Perhaps it was lost in translation somehow when transcribed from Hindi into English?
Regardless, I did not personally like this book, although the author's story is absolutely incredible and worth knowing about. Therefore, I can only recommend it with caution- if you can look psat the writing, you may enjoy it.

Yes, the style is basic, perhaps even crude, but Halder's sometimes halting prose is effective in communicating the pain and chaos of her life. The abrupt transitions between first and third person are very effective: they allow both the author and the reader some distance from painful introspections.
While there are many very distressing episodes, the book is basically hopeful. Allow this book to evoke empathy, and perhaps even motivate you to act on behalf of women, children, and/or the poor.

A Lifeline for 21st Century Christian Seekers

Having read most of the Revernd Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault's previously published works, and having had the good fortune to attend a number of her teaching sessions, I have awaited with eagerness and anticipation for months the arrivial of this, her newest book, The Holy Trintiy and the Law of Three. I was not disappointed. In the pages of this book, she mingles the fruit of her own deep prayer and meditiation which flourishes in her own particular creative insights, with those of Christian mystics from centuries past and the cutting edge theologians, mystics, and phlosophers of our own time to arrive at a truly new understanding and conceptualization of the centrality of the Holy Trinity to the heart of Christianity--and yet one which harmonizes with the lived faith of Christians since the time Jesus walked on the planet as truly human and truly God without separaton or confusion. For those who are seeking to embrace traditional Christianity without reservation, but who have difficulty with some of the formulations, language, and doctrinal accretions of the centuries, this book is a lifeline. I regard myslelf as such a seeker, and I recommend this book with gratitude to all such seekers. Although I have purchased many excellent books and products from Amazon over the years, I have never before been moved to write a review. A Surprising Balance

Where I come from, "mysticism" can be a dirty word to some. I am an Episcopal priest with a conservative background, and so I was holding my breath as I began to read. A trusted and deep-thinking parishioner gave this book to me to read if I would promise to discuss it with her afterwards. "Metaphysics", "cosmogonic principles" and the like are such esoteric terms that classically-trained theologians might be wary of straying too far off the beaten path into Process Theology or other such buzzword to traditional church teaching. But Cynthia grabbed my attention right away with her assertion that "feminizing the Trinity won't work". As she laid out the inherant inadequacy of binary systems as paradigms of metaphysical thought for understanding the Trinity, and described the natural fit between assymetrical ternary systems and the Trinity, I was hooked. About two thirds through the book, I had occasion to meditate (as an evolving contemplative) on the concepts for several hours. Certain things I had always been conflicted about (I call it the "pastoral disconnect", or that difference between how you treat a person pastorally and what you say about their kind from the pulpit) began to fall into place. It was a freeing experience, and one that will have positive ramifications as I work out everything from my theodicy to the pastoral care I give as a Christian minister. Cynthia respects and understands classical Trinitarian theology, and helps to link it with emerging realities that can be accessible to the whole world. And that stands in agreement with Jesus Himself, who is the world's chief Ecumenical Officer, as well as its Creator. --Chris Huff +

Ground Breaking and Important!

I was lucky enough to read The Holy Trinity early, and so I am ready and eager to write a quick review. I know the book will take some work, especially if you have no background in theology or mysticism, but it is well, well worth it. Cynthia, with her acute mind and marvelous choices of words, communicates something that can rearrange your own mind--and because of that your heart might just change too! I have attempted to write my own books on non-dual consciousness and contemplation, but this goes much further into the "how" of it all and even the "why" of the "law of three". If you even get one third of it--and you surely will--it will allow you to see and think in a whole new way--and a way that is generative, life giving, and can only be called wisdom. Who would have thought that this "code breaker" was hidden within our Christian doctrine of the Trinity?! I think the implications of this "radical truth" could change everything from our politics, to our social relationships, to our deepest encounters with the Divine.

Ordered Used - very good condition and that's what I got. No issues with vendor.
That being said: what a rip off. Regardless of type, new or used or condition, these things are going for $160+ and they are a sad case. It's soft cover for starters. For a $160+ textbook, one expects a hard bound book. Heck, my $80 Statistics book was hardbound. This thing is the softest of the soft cover books I've purchased for college. It's built like a $12.99 bargain bin book at the local bookseller. Handle with care because this thing will wear badly. If hardbound was too much to ask for, a heavier grade of card stock is in order considering the life that textbooks lead. The paper used for the pages is that thin but seemingly durable paper we have all come to expect in a modern textbook. I'm sure the content will be fine. It's simply that this book is poor value for money.

Pam Fox is one of a handful of Certified Lipsologists in the world. She is a keynote speaker on the subject and has appeared in interviews on ABC, NBC, CBS, The Travel Channel and several local TV stations in the Phoenix area. She has been invited to speak on radio programs as far away as South Africa. She is presently touring with a major cosmetic company at events nationwide. This is one of those books that will change forever the way you look at your own life. Pam Fox has a gift, and it is not only in reading your lip lines in your lip-sticked lip prints but she also has a gift in relaying her expertise in a way that allows us to gain insight for ourselves into who we are based on our personal patterns. No two lip prints are alike she says, just like finger prints. They are unique to each individual. There are holograms all over the body that show how our biography is playing out in our biology, and Pam helps us explore a very unique way of getting to know ourselves on a more conscious level based on our subconscious thoughts and how that shows up in our Lip Prints. I was continuously intrigued to find myself easily in the shapes, lines and nuances of the lips and I was seriously wondering throughout the book - What are my Lips Really Saying? Her writing style is witty and draws us in as we seek more and more about who we are. I was hooked at the beginning as she explained how the story of the lips evolved, entrenched by the time I read that same size lip fullness on top and bottom meant you are a teacher (which I am), and beyond intrigued as I continued to read about myself within the lines of the pages and the lines in my lips. By the time I finished the book, I was ready and willing to find other’s patterns within these pages. I know that it will take time to get anywhere near Pam’s level of expertise in understanding the lip prints, but I do know that I will have fun trying. Kudos Pam Fox, for a truly Fun and Engaging Read. I look forward to the Course.

I'm impressed with Pam's skill at presenting the material. She is deeply insightful and compassionate and it shows in how she presents the information. It's a good book for adding to my knowledge of lip print reading.

About the Author
Dr. V.S. Ramachandran is Distinguished Researcher at the Institute for Research in Construction, National Research Council Canada, Ottawa, Canada. He is author of six other books and numerous articles. Dr. Ramachandran is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Ceramic Society (UK), the American Ceramic Society, and is the recipient of many awards and honors for his scientific accomplishments in the concrete and ceramic fields.

Dr. James J. Beaudoin is Principal Research Officer at the Institute for Research in Construction, National Research Council Canada, Ottawa, Canada. He is author of over 300 publications, including three books, and holds several patents. He received the Copeland Award from the American Ceramic Society in 1998 and the American Concrete Institute Wason Medal for materials research in 1999.
