A RESEARCH PSYCHOLOGISTS CRITIQUES HIS PROFESSION
By Steven H Propp
Robyn Mason Dawes (1936-2010) was an American psychologist with the Oregon Research Institute, who wrote other books such as Rational Choice in an Uncertain World: The Psychology of Judgment and Decision Making, Everyday Irrationality: How Pseudo- Scientists, Lunatics, And The Rest Of Us Systematically Fail To Think Rationally, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1994 book, "As I argue throughout this book, behavior is influenced by multiple factors. My own decision to write this book has been motivated by two factors in particular: anger, and a sense of social obligation... Why is anger a motivation for writing this book? Because the rapid growth and professionalization of my field, psychology, has led it to abandon a commitment it made at the inception of that growth. That commitment was to establish a mental health profession that would be based on research findings, employing insofar as possible well-validated techniques and principles... Instead of relying on research-based knowledge in their practice, too many mental health professionals rely on 'trained clinical intuition.' ... I am angered when I see my former colleagues make bald assertions based on their 'years of clinical experience' in settings of crucial importance to others' lives---such as in commitment hearings... or about suspected child sexual abuse... I feel a sense of obligation because society has supported my research and has personally supported me sufficiently well that I do not... have to take a vow of semipoverty to pursue my interests." (Pg. vii-ix)

He states in the first chapter, "Emotional suffering is very real, and the vast majority of people in these expanding professions sincerely wish to help those suffering. But are they really the experts they claim to be? Is our society justified in granting them special status and paying them from common funds?... These questions have been studied quite extensively, often by psychologists themselves. There is by now an impressive body of research evidence indicating that the answer to these questions is no." (Pg. 4)

He asserts, "Under the guise of advancing 'positive mental health'... the profession of psychology has propounded a simplistic philosophy of life. This philosophy maintains that the purpose of life is to maximize one's mental health, which is dependent wholly on self-esteem." (Pg. 33) He rejects the proposal to train psychologists in the prescription of drugs: "Because there are so many more psychologists than clinical psychiatrists, success in this endeavor could quite literally glut the country with people giving out drugs and people living under their influence." (Pg. 36)

He argues, "The most defensible answer to the question of why therapy works is, We don't know. We should do research to find out, and indeed many people are devoting careers to just such research. But we do know that the training, credentials, and experience of psychotherapists are irrelevant... The horrible irony is that by supporting licensing, income, and status for credentialed practitioners, the mental health professions have treated variables that really don't matter as if they did matter." (Pg. 61-62) He adds, "Psychotherapy works... There is no reason, however, to seek out a highly paid, experienced therapist with a lot of credentials. If verbal therapy is sought, paraprofessionals are equally effective, especially empathetic ones." (Pg. 73)

Dawes' book will be eagerly read by those who are critical of psychology and psychiatry.

Review
Canadian Philosophical Reviews Ben L Mijuskovic, Ph.D., LCSW possess the rare interdisciplinary pedigree which empowers him to speak both toacademic and practical concerns. With advanced degrees in bothphilosophy and literature, he examines numerous aspects of loneliness in his sweeping study. His three decades as a licensed therapist groundshis arguments in practical, clinical experiences. He has observedloneliness at play in children, adolescents, and adults in psychiatricand medical hospitals, state institutions, and mental health facilities. The book encapsulates his lifelong study and extends a richphilosophical exploration of rationalism and phenomenology in order tocaution practitioners about the dangers of empirical and cognitiveapproaches to mental health. His work serves as a mediator between twoacademic communities and deserves careful attention from bothphilosophical and psychological audiences. The book opens with a chapter on historical and conceptual foundations to assert that it is an apriori state of existence rooted in the nature of self-reflexivity which must be transcended throughout life in community only after it isexpressed, recognized, and confronted. Loneliness occurs concurrent tothe infant's conscious development as her alienation from other objectsand from her mother eventuate in self-identification as an isolatedbeing in the world. Mijuskovic's preference for philosophical firstprinciples permits him to correlate metaphysical dualism, subjectiveidealist consciousness, and loneliness throughout his study. ChaptersTwo through Four tackle philosophical dimensions of his theory ofloneliness, including self-consciousness, reflexivity, intentionality, transcendence, and phenomenology. These chapters present a historicalapproach to loneliness within a philosophical framework developed over40 years of academic inquiry and publishing. He challenges his readersto examine how these philosophical claims hold serious ramifications and possibilities as corrective measures to the overly materialistic ,behaviorist paradigm in contemporary psychiatric practices. In chaptersFive through Eight, he moves from philosophy to psychology, from themind to the self. He addresses the practitioner; however, philosophically inclined readers will better understand the praxis ofphilosophy of mind in psychiatric and psychological arenas. Chapter Five features his "umbrella concept" of loneliness as an emotional andcognitive experience akin to Husserl's  "free imaginative variation."Chapters Six and Seven exposes weaknesses in behavioral and cognitivepsychological assumptions through discussions of the unconscious, thesubconscious and he concurs with Husserlean phenomenology concerning the primacy of consciousness over language. The final chapter addressesseveral therapeutic measures, including empathy, friendship andreligious practices. Feeling Lonesome is a must read for anyoneinterested in philosophy of mind, philosophical psychology, orloneliness. It touches on our most private selves; our insularity, andour innermost existence in a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective.Mijuskovic encapsulates a life of rich philosophical investigationswhile tempering and empowering his narrative with therapeuticpracticality. Michael D. Bob, Johns Hopkins University

"Mijuskovic makes a powerful and very persuasive argument for his position, and one learns an enormous amount in following the argument of his superb book." - Philosophy in Review

Review

"Ben Mijuskovic’s lifelong exploration of our human condition culminates in this seminal study of loneliness. The investigation traces its etiologies in the philosophical traditions, its presence and influences in literature, and its manifestations in psychological behaviors and practices. Finally, it debunks current psychiatric practices of overmedication and superficially expedient therapies. Not only does the text help us understand the dispositions of loneliness, but it offers means to guard against it. Warning readers of the dangers of retreat into interiority, the author argues for our using our consciousness transitively to go beyond the confines of that consciousness so besotted by loneliness. As in previous works, Mijuskovic casts his thesis in a pool of considerable disciplinary context. Let’s celebrate both this marvelous study and its compelling and wise assertion: we must strive for and seek goals and values beyond the self in order to lead meaningful lives."—Patricia Cherin, Professor Emeritus, Interdisciplinary Studies, California State University, Dominguez Hills

"Loneliness is part of the human condition. We are deeply social animals, yet each of us experiences the world as an 'I' subject. I think (and feel and act), therefore I am. Ben Lazare Mijuskovic offers a systematic study of loneliness, informed by his rich knowledge of the history of philosophy and of psychoanalysis, and shaped by his reading of literature and his work as a therapist. The move from Plato onward, with knowledge of literature, into psychoanalytic work, is terrific. An incisive study of a crucial aspect of human experience."—David Woodruff Smith, Professor of Philosophy, Department of Philosophy, University of California at Irvine

"There is always a risk in marshaling the arguments of leading philosophers, linguists, and personality theorists and the insights of novelists that the treatment will be superficial, but this study thoughtfully and thoroughly considers the contributions of all these leading intellects across disciplines to the concept of loneliness. Moreover, Mijuskovic avoids simplistic approaches to make his case that reflexivity is the prison of loneliness. That is, he does not simply define human beings as innately lonely or argue for such a definition of humanity. He explains why human beings are innately lonely and offers in the last chapter strategies for dealing with the human sense of isolation. In all, this is a perspicacious treatment of the problem, a careful assessment of the contributions to the concept from leading thinkers and novelists, and a thoughtful analysis of avenues of escape through empathic intimacy."
—George Schedler, Emeritus professor of philosophy, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale

Lisa is Truely a Generation's Specialist!
By Diane Marie Pinkard
I just loved Lisa's Orrell's book, The Millennials INTO Leadership. She really gets what these younger generations are thinking and feeling, and where they are coming from. And she knows where they want to go. She offers great insight for any young person that has ambition for being an effective young leader in the world and in the workplace. And, she knows how to tell them what they need to know to reach their potential and achieve success. For myself, I am a Baby Boomer, and I gleaned great insight for better understanding this young generation, so I can better relate and work with them. I have just written my first sales training book, Just Treat Me Like I Matter: The Heart of Sales. And it is full of information about "what make people tick," especially in the sales arena. So what I like about Lisa's book, it breaks down what I know and segments it into the world of the young Gen Y's - and that is a rich offering in itself!Just Treat Me Like I Matter: The Heart of Sales

Dr. Snow: How the FBI Nailed an Ivy League Coke King, by Carol Saline

This riveting, true-crime adventure lays out the rise and fall of a multimillion-dollar yuppie drug ring run by a dental student and his two classmates. Awash in drugs, sex and money, the college chums built a fifty-kilo-a-month cocaine conglomerate, buying and selling enough white powder to anesthetize thirteen Eastern seaboard states. The kingpin, Larry Lavin, a model husband and father, managed his enterprise like a Fortune 500 business, earning over a milliondollars a year before his 25th birthday. After the FBI cracked the ring and arrested dozens of his operatives, Lavin jumped bail and lived like a rich retiree until two dogged agents tracked him down and sent him to prison for 21 years.

DR. SNOW Carol Saline

Larry Lavin was as much an enigma to his neighbors as he was to the FBI. When the outgoing young dentist and his reserved, pretty wife, Marcia, moved to the Main Line suburb of Devon and into their quarter-million-dollar white-brick colonial home in 1982, they were just twenty-seven years old and by far the youngest couple on Timber Lane, a long winding road of large, custom twenty-year-old homes on beautifully landscaped wooded tracts. Larry had a dental degree but no job, and he didn't seem to be looking for one either. Yet without any visible source of income they seemed to have more money than anybody else on the quietly affluent block where wealth was never paraded and definitely took a back seat to respectability. A retired Navy admiral lived across the street from the Lavins and John Eisenhower, the son of a former United States president lived next door. His wife, Barbara, wondered how this "awfully pleasant young man" could afford to buy a house in an area where most families were enjoying the financial fruits of middle age, then go on to install expensive additions like a pool, a greenhouse, and a solar heating system. While there was the usual gossip, most of the neighbors accepted Lavin's explanation that he'd gotten into the record business in college and had become very successful managing rock bands.

Dr. Lavin made a point of reinforcing his successful image by inviting neighbors like Mrs. Eisenhower into the tastefully decorated house and proudly showing them the framed gold record hanging in the bedroom he'd converted to an office. Usually the gregarious dentist did the house tour, happily chatting about the marvels of solar energy and his plans to remodel the recreation room, while Marcia Lavin kept to herself and puttered about the kitchen. Larry was always the friendlier and more visible of the two. He spent a lot of his time gardening and encouraging neighbors to borrow his tools or offering to help them with chores like putting in a new azalea bush. When he discovered that the retired admiral across the street was also a dentist, he made a point of walking over to discuss some new technique he'd just read about in a dental journal. The admiral thought it odd that someone so interested in dentistry didn't seem interested in working at it, until Larry mentioned he was looking around for the right opportunity. He finally found it that spring about a year after he'd graduated, when he bought a small practice in Philadelphia that catered to patients on public assistance. Based on the elegant life-style he'd established, the neighbors viewed his dental practice as more of a rich man's hobby than an economic necessity.

Indeed when FBI agent Chuck Reed visited Dr. Lavin at his unpretentious office early in 1983, the dental practice was in better shape than Lavin's drug business. He'd probably sold one thousand kilos of cocaine in the last five years, and if he included the money pocketed by all the principals in his ring, the total earnings came to nearly ten million dollars. His personal share of that had been a million annually since 1981. Money wasn't the problem; it was management. Brian Riley, a kid he'd brought down from New England to buy coke for him in Florida and distribute it out of his Philadelphia headquarters, was threatening to walk out. That left him with only Bruce Taylor-another New Englander, a tough biker type and cocaine addict with tattoos on his forearms. What little brains Taylor had brought with him into the world were well on their way to being fried by all the cocaine he used.

Very interesting

Great book. Very well written by an established journalist. Same story as "Doctor Dealer" by Bowden. Both are great in their own right. Buy it..

Great look at the Philly coke biz in the 80's
By Jack A. Parsons
Being from philly, i know alot of the characters in this book. that being said, i know alot of the characters in alot of gangster books written about philly, and alot of them suck or are a bunch of lies. this one is an exception! it's true, interesting and very detailed. so detailed that there's a chapter that basically tells you step by step how to re-rock coke. Carol Saline did a great job. i was impressed. AAAAAAA+++++++

also, 'doctor dealer' is pretty good too. it was written by mark bowden, the guy that wrote 'black hawk down'. both authors are local philly writers.

Good read......but....

This is a fascinating story, but I liked Mark Bowden's book on this subject more. I bought this one mainly because it has some photographs, whereas Bowden's book did not.
