This book was recommended on The Huff Post on a blog about horror fiction. Strangely, it is a horror book, but not in the usual sense. I enjoyed reading this book and it completely held my attention. I'm not sure I was totally satisfied with the ending, but maybe all good books leave you with questions at the end.

About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation. Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean's Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School's finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California.

This International version nearly identical to US book Corporate Finance 8th Edition ISBN 0073337180. I was supposed to have the US book for my class and mistakenly bought this one. I compared my book to a classmates and the only differences I found were in the problems. Rather than an American company name like Irrigation Specialists and money in $'s, the problem would read Broslofski and money is in Euros. So if you want to save money, I recommend buying the international version.

In the first part of the book, he proposes a new reading of the metaphysics of substance in Spinoza: he argues that for Spinoza modes both inhere in and are predicated of God. Using extensive textual evidence, he shows that Spinoza considered modes to be God's propria. He goes on to clarify Spinoza's understanding of infinity, mereological relations, infinite modes, and the flow of finite things from God's essence. In the second part of the book, Melamed relies on this interpretation of the substance-mode relation and the nature of infinite modes and puts forward two interrelated theses about the structure of the attribute of Thought and its overarching role in Spinoza's metaphysics. First, he shows that Spinoza had not one, but two independent doctrines of parallelism. Then, in his final main thesis, Melamed argues that, for Spinoza, ideas have a multifaceted (in fact, infinitely faceted) structure that allows one and the same idea to represent the infinitely many modes which are parallel to it in the infinitely many attributes. Thought turns out to be coextensive with the whole of nature. Spinoza cannot embrace an idealist reduction of Extension to Thought because of his commitment to the conceptual separation of the attributes. Yet, within Spinoza's metaphysics, Thought clearly has primacy over the other attributes insofar as it is the only attribute which is as elaborate, as complex, and, in some senses, as powerful as God.

A New Study of Spinoza on Thought and Being

It is all too easy with a book one has revered for a long time to forget the difficulties of understanding. This difficulty is particularly the case with a notoriously complex work such as the Ethics of Spinoza. Yitzhak Melamed's ambitious recent book, "Spinoza's Metaphysics: Substance and Thought" (2013) offers an insightful but bristlingly difficult analysis of perhaps the two key concepts of Spinoza's metaphysics. The work consists primarily of an analysis of the first two books of the Ethics, on God and on mind. Melamed also draws heavily on Spinoza's correspondence and to a lesser degree on his earlier writings. Melamed is a Professor of Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University. He earned his doctorate at Yale under the supervision of Spinoza scholar, Michael Della Rocca. Throughout his book, Melamed engages with his mentor, sometimes agreeing and often disagreeing.

Contemporary analytical philosophy tends to be highly suspicious of metaphysical philosophizing about the nature of reality. Much of this anti-metaphysical approach has impacted the manner in which philosophers approach Spinoza. The most immediately striking feature of Melamed's book is its overtly metaphysical character. Melamed, probably rightly, sees Spinoza as a rationalistic thinker practicing metaphysics as a means to understand reality in a grand style. Melamed takes Spinoza seriously in this attempt and tries to reject ways, such as the 'principle of charitable interpretation" in softening Spinoza the metaphysician. Melamed appears to have a great deal of sympathy for and understanding of metaphysical philosophy himself. His discussion is textually and philosophically informed. But Melamed is not at all hesitant in filling in apparent gaps in Spinoza's text and in offering what he sees are in part speculative readings in interpretation.

Melamed views the benefit of studying a difficult thinker such as Spinoza not in seeing how he is like us but precisely in seeing how he is different and, perhaps, learning from the difference. In one of several explanations of this approach, Melamed writes:

"Spinoza's philosophy is bold and rich in challegnes to our 'commonsense intuitions," and insofar as it provides powerful arguments to motivate these challenges, I believe that we cannot ask for more. Bold and well-argued philosophy has the indispensable virtue of being able to unsettle and try us, to move us to reconsider what seems natural and obvious, and possibly even to change our most basic beliefs. Indeed, for those who seek to test- rather than secure and confirm -- their old and well-fortified intuitions, Spinoza is nothing short of a living spring."

Melamed considers Spinoza sympathetically, boldly, and creatively in both parts of his book on Spinoza's metaphysics of substance and Spinoza's metaphysics of thought. In a brief introduction, Melamed introduces two metaphysical principles that pervade Spinoza's philosophy. The first, the principle of sufficient reason, (PSR), he adopts from Della Rocca's study of Spinoza while softening it substantially in the course of his study. The second principle is the priority of knowing the infinite over knowing the finite for Spinoza, a seemingly paradoxical but characteristic teaching of this thinker. Hence, Spinoza begins his philosophizing with God, the broadest possible subject, rather than with finite things.

The treatment of substance makes the longer of the two portions of Melamed's book. Broadly speaking, Melamed considers and rejects two frequent readings of Spinoza. The first, epitomized by Edwin Curley, takes much of the metaphysics out of Spinoza by reading him analytically and scientifically. Spinoza's substance is seen as a scientific principle or as an efficient cause. Melamed offers a number of strong textual reasons for rejecting this interpretation, but his philosophical reasoning is at least equally important. Melamed wants to find that Spinoza has something metaphysically important to present in his own right. Thus, Melamed develops and supports what once was a traditionally pantheistic understanding of Spinoza's thinking, and he defends this approach against objections early lodged against Spinoza and continuing to be pressed.

German idealists culminating in Hegel took an opposite approach to Spinoza and understood him as an "acosmic" thinker similar to the ancient Greek philosopher, Parmenides. This approach sees Spinoza as denying the existence of the finite world and holding only the absolute, or substance, is real. Here again, Melamed finds persuasive textual and philosophical reasons for rejecting this approach, although he finds this reading possesses a certain appeal. Spinoza becomes a difficult and fascinating thinker in his effort to have both absolute substance and a world of finite particulars. Melamed works to weave the strands together in his analysis. He does so in part through a discussion of modes, especially infinite modes, in Spinoza's Ethics. Melamed finds that most students of Spinoza have insufficiently understood the role of modes in their understanding of substance.

Melamed regards the second part of his study, on the mind, as breaking more new ground that the first part. One of Spinoza's most important teachings is proposition 7 of Book 2 of the Ethics: "The order and connection of ideas is the same as the order and connection of things" and its attendant demonstration and scholiam. This proposition ordinarily is taken to urge a parallelism between mind and body. Melamed tries to read the proposition and its support as developing two distinct doctrines of parallelism neither of which reduce to the other. The ulitmate goal is to develop the nature and primacy of thought in Spinoza's philosophy. The discussion soon grows thorny and brings in Spinoza's teachings of the "infinitely many attributes" unknown to the human mind. Broadly, for Melamed, thought includes all the attributes as well as substance itself in a way the other attributes do not. He thus finds thought primary in Spinoza's scheme of things, Importantly again, Melamed resists a reduction of Spinoza to philosophical idealism because, Melamed finds, Spinoza insists throughout on the independent reality of objects and of the attribute of extension.

The result of this challenging study and analysis is, to simplify, a reading of Spinoza that tends more towards the mystic, idealistic-leaning elements of this thought than to hard-headedness. Readers of the Ethics fall in general somewhere between these two poles. In a summary at the end of his book, Melamed describes Spinoza as a substantial monist and an attributes pluralist who also teaches a unique form of dualism. The dualism is not the traditional philosophical mind-body dualism but a dualist between thought (broader than mind) and being. Melamed concludes:

"Spinoza is neither a materialist nor a reductive idealist, and even the 'double-aspect theorist' label would not fit him. His view is one that grants clear preeminence to thought without adopting reductive idealism. Here perhaps lies Spinoza's real philosophical genius (i.e. in the fact that he forces us to suspend our traditional ways of addressing the issue, and makes us consider it anew from a not-so-familiar perspective.")

I learned a great deal from thinking about Spinoza again with Melamed. I appreciated, even though I am not sure I share, his unapologetically metaphysical approach. This is a detailed study which will be unsuitable for readers with little background and only a casual interest in Spinoza. Readers wanting to engage seriously with Spinoza's thought will find Melamed's book valuable.

WORLD FAMOUS BIBLICAL SCHOLAR ON THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTIANITY

Anyone who has read anything in the field of biblical studies knows Martin Hengel. In "The Son of God" he asks how an obscure Galilean is described by Paul about 25 years later "as a preexistent divine figure" (p 1).

This book, which was written in the 70s, answers those believers in the History of Religions theories. Hengel points out that "The Hellenistic mysteries did not know of sons of gods who died and rose again" (p 25) anymore than did the cults which featured dying vegetation dieties like Osiris. After examining and disposing of all these theories, he takes on the gnostic myths. Here he points out the tiresome error of many (for example, a certain Mr. Crossan) who try to place gnostic texts that were written in the third century back into the first century. "Gnosticism itself is first visible as a spiritual movement at the end of the first century at the earliest" (p 34) he points out tartly.

Other interesting points: Hengel argues for an inner consistency of the belief in Christ, Jesus' unique relationship with "Abba", Jesus' position in comparison to that of all the angels, and the differences between early Christianity and other religions.

What's wrong with perfected Platonism?

Martin Hengel is a Christian theologian of the more "traditional" bent. Personally, I'm not a Christian at all. Still, I enjoyed his book "The `Hellenization' of Judea in the first century after Christ". Hengel argues, quite persuasively in my opinion, that *both* Jesus and Paul might have been Hellenized Jews, since Palestine and Palestinian Judaism were Hellenized during the period in question. There is therefore a certain continuity between Jesus and Paul, rather than the sharp break postulated by modern higher criticism. While Hengel's agenda is theological (no surprise there!), his arguments in "The `Hellenization' of Judea" are nevertheless quite strong. Reading a response from, say, Bart Ehrman would be interesting.

"The Son of God", unfortunately, is more overtly theological than the book on Hellenization. Hengel attempts to prove that the idea of Jesus the dying and resurrecting god-man is unique and therefore cannot be explained in terms of influence from pagan or Gnostic sources. Now, I don't deny that the Christian concept of Jesus in many ways *is* unique, but is it unique in the sense that nothing whatsoever preceded it in terms of influence and inspiration? Not even Hengel believes so, but he is at pains to prove that "the Son of God" is a Jewish rather than a pagan or Gnostic idea. He mentions various intermediary redeemer figures from the Jewish tradition, discusses the Jewish concept of God's Wisdom (which was often personified), analyzes Philo's philosophy, and even makes parallels to Jewish mysticism.

There is just one problem with all this.

Ancient Judaism was Hellenized, remember?

Already in his book on the Hellenization of Judea, Hengel puts "Hellenization" within quotation marks, claiming that it was impossible to draw the line between the Jewish and the Hellenized elements, both being a seamless Jewish whole at the time of Jesus. This is unconvincing, since the same Hengel has written several volumes on exactly what in Judaism was Hellenized! Hellenism, of course, was "pagan", and that's why Hengel tries to have it both ways. If Judaism was Hellenized, then "Jewish" influences on early Christology might have been "pagan" or at least hybrid. This is the Pandora's Box that Hengel attempts to shut with this little volume, I think.

God's Wisdom was often personified...as a woman. Hengel never really discusses this, swiftly rejecting any Egyptian influences in a footnote. Others, of course, are not so sure. Since Judaism lacked a goddess, it's rather logical to search for pagan influences in this case. Further, Hengel himself points out that Philo was a Middle Platonist, but somehow believes that this makes him immune to influences from the mysteries or from the Egyptian surrounding. A more reasonable position, surely, would be the opposite. Hengel also admits that Philo somehow combined the Platonist concept of the Logos with the personified Jewish idea of Wisdom. This is obviously a forerunner to the famous Johannine prologue in the New Testament, but once again it's difficult to see in what sense this is a typically "Jewish" idea, rather than an idea developed from perhaps three different strands: Greek Platonism, Jewish tradition and (perhaps) Egyptian religion. Nor does Hengel discuss the curious fact, that Philo allegorically spoke of a virgin birth!

The similarities between Jesus as the Son of God and various figures from Jewish mysticism (such as Metatron) are striking, but since these sources are *later* than Christianity, it's unclear why Hengel uses them. He rejects similarities between Christianity and the mystery religions on the grounds that these are only known from late sources, and might therefore express Christian influence on the mysteries, rather than the opposite. But if so, why use late Jewish sources? Metatron might also be a Christian influence, this time on later Judaism.

An issue never discussed by the author at all, are the Platonic parallels to the crucifixion. Doesn't Plato mention that the righteous man might be hanged on a pole? Doesn't Plato also talk about The Son of God who is suspended crosswise in the universe? Justin Martyr certainly knew of this, and even uses it as evidence *for* Christianity, claiming that the Christian message is "perfected Platonism"! While it's true that most pagans (and Jews) considered the crucifixion to be a scandal, Justin's apologia shows that the opposite reaction was also possible. And Justin, of course, was a converted pagan.

In "The `Hellenization' of Judea", Hengel (apparently somewhat tongue in cheek!) mentions that Jesus turned water into wine - a miracle traditionally associated with Dionysius - and that there were Dionysian cults in the vicinity of Cana. In "The Son of God", the author also mentions the Corinthians, who had misunderstood the Pauline preaching of freedom in a somewhat Bacchanalian fashion. However, he never wrestles with the possible implications...

How theologians grapple with these issues, is a bit outside my jurisdiction, but they should at least pose the problem as it stands. C.S. Lewis wasn't afraid to do so, and came up with the solution that we should expect certain similarities between Christianity and paganism. Apparently, Lewis didn't think that this threatened the unique character of Jesus. Hengel, it seems, fear that it just might. His "The Son of God" therefore feels like an apologetic in the bad sense of that term.

I mean, what on earth is wrong with perfected Platonism, anyway?
