First, the construction of a project baseline schedule is a central theme throughout the various chapters of the book, and is discussed from a complexity point of view with and without the presence of project resources. Second, the creation of an awareness of the weak parts in a baseline schedule is discussed at the end of the two baseline scheduling parts as schedule risk analysis techniques that can be applied on top of the baseline schedule. Third, the baseline schedule and its risk analyses can be used as guidelines during the project control step where actual deviations can be corrected within the margins of the project’s time and cost reserves.

this is my favorite book i've ever read.i'd recomend it to any 1 who likes reading horror books.it wasn't really scary but it was interesting n exciting.the ending is a total surprise.its definately worth reading.i literally couldn't put it down.i'm not even kidding.i bought the book at the bookstore.it was worth every cent.All of stine's fearstreet books are good.

Emily's new stepsister(Jessie) takes over Emily's room,steals her clothes,also lies to everyone.Emily tries to get along with her,but she doesn't trust Jessie.Emily is terrified of her.She learns a horrible secret from Jessies diary.Has Jessie acually killed?emily must expose Jessie before its too late.

I hope my review was helpful.Also i hope it wasn't boring.

This IS the best book R.L. Stine EVER wrote!!!

I have read this book so many times I know it by heart! LOL

This book is about a girl named Emily who's father died, so her mother decides re-marry. Emily, her mother and her sister Nancy live in the same house. Her stepfather, her step sister Jessie and her step brother moves in, Emily has to share her room with Jessie, at first Jessie is kind of mean to Emily, when Jessie gets to Emily's room she takes Emily's Teddy Bear and rips the head off of it after that bad things start happening to Emily. Someone puts peroxide in Emily's shampoo and her hair gets dyed green, someone stabs Emily's dog with a knife and leaves him in the middle of the kitchen floor, someone erases Emily's whole book report that she worked on for weeks, someone sets the school bathroom on fire and locks Emily inside, Emily is scared that it might be Jessie who is trying to kill her when she finds Jessie's diary one night and reads that Jessie might have commited a murder....this book has a surprise twist and a sad ending to it. This is the best Fear Street book R.L. Stine has written.

He loves his job, he gets to hang with long-time friends, and he enjoys water sports, motorcycling, and travel. All in all, it's a good life.<br /><br />Everything he knows is thrown off-kilter when he meets his new neighbor, Gabby Holland, who happens to be in a relationship with another man. For her part, Gabby is excited, scared, and confused by the things she feels around Travis. She's been dedicated to her golf-crazy boyfriend for a long while, but Travis makes her feel new things. At some point, she'll have to make a decision.<br /><br />Famous for his take on the sensitive hero and tender love, Nicholas Sparks latest offering is THE CHOICE, in which unexpected feelings lead to unexpected things. As the fun-loving guy with a big heart, Travis is easy to like from the beginning. Gabby, on the other hand, is a very mixed bag.<br /><br />On the surface, Gabby seems to be kind hearted, but she comes across as someone who is easily upset, has doormat tendencies, and can't quite control her emotions. Travis sees her as sweet and having a great sense of humor. Readers are likely to see her as lacking a sense of humor until later, and even then it's sketchy. Characters are supposed to grow throughout a story, and Gabby does, but her introduction makes it difficult to sympathize with her from the beginning, especially in regards to her relationship with family and, well, her steady boyfriend.<br /><br />A tragedy in the last hundred pages of the novel almost redeems all that went before. It's hinted at in the prologue, but Sparks elects to play a trick on the read, leading them to expect something quite different from what actually happens. It'd difficult to explain without giving it away, other than to say that it straddles the fence of cheap versus clever.<br /><br />THE CHOICE is an average read for an average day. I am an avid reader and rarely am moved to tears by a male author, but find I am always reaching for the tissues when I read a N.S. book. I love the emotion, the "realness" of his characters. The plot centers around two people who meet and fall in love and the choices and promises they make to each other during their relationship. If you loved THE NOTEBOOK, and it's sequel, THE WEDDING, you will love THE CHOICE. Not my favorite genre. My wife has read all of his books, and I've started reading them now too because they are easy to read and Sparks is a great writer. The summary on the inside cover tells you almost everything you need to know about the plot. Travis Parker is a 32-year old bachelor that loves having his married friends over for cookouts. Gabby is the new neighbor who is new to town, has few friends, and wonders when her boyfriend Kevin is going to ask her to marry him. Gabby at first doesn' t like Travis. He seems like an insensitive neighbor. From the plot summary, you know they are going to marry, so the first two thirds of the book covers a couple of days that Gabby and Travis spend together while Kevin is out of town. They go parasailing with Travis's friends. They ride motorcycles. And they fall in love. Sparks writes in a way that keeps you turning the pages, but the first part of the book seemed overly long because you know they are going to get together. There really isn't any conflict except Gabby's doubts about her relationship with Kevin. Even that isn't as strong as it could have been. The boyfriend doesn't really stand a chance when it comes to the true love Gabby and Travis discover. As usual, Sparks creates a girl in Gabby that is, while not perfect, a girl you could imagine falling in love with. Travis has similar qualites. He is adventerous, a gentleman, and although a bachelor, is great with kids and hopes to have them someday.<br /><br />Part Two begins in the present, when Gabby and Travis have been married for ten years, and here, we find out what kind of "choice" Travis must face. Here, the plot thickens and the conflict increases. As with the two other Sparks books I've read, a lot of things have to be forced to happen for Sparks to come up with the kind of plot and conflict he wants. Still, the conflict Travis faces is real and sincere and there isn't really a right decision.<br /><br />I enjoyed this book a lot. I wish that the first part, which lasts about two-thirds of the book, had told more of a story instead of detailing every last bit of interaction between Travis and Gabby over a two day period. But is it really just about a backache?<br /><br />The author and journalist Carlo Pizzati, suffering from a severe backache for years, finally decides it is time to find out its origin in the hope to cure it once and for all. His journey starts from a posturologist in Vicenza (North of Italy) and it carries on to far away places, looking for the right cure, but does such cure truly exist?<br /><br />The author then starts on a really unusual journey, furthermore he has just separated from his wife and has a young son, toward whom a deep and indissoluble love is perceived. His journey is not exactly "technical". Rather, his wish to get rid of the pain represents, in my opinion, the beginning to conceive things, and life, under a different perspective, unrolling, like a magic carpet, a world of treatments and intriguing cures that really made me think and ponder.<br /><br />The author meets up with different people, in a whirlwind of improbable machineries, esoteric and palliative treatments, from Italy to the USA, from Latin America to India. Meetings of every kind, from doctors to shamans, passing through some real charlatan I would say! All of this to try and get rid of a pain that, at this point, I really thought was more psychological than physical.<br /><br />Some chapters are very emotional, I truly think they are the result of a search for some peace of mind during a rather difficult period of the author's life. He is forever walking around with a heavy rucksack on his shoulders, which in my opinion represents life, symbolically.<br /><br />However, there are several funny touches, improbable situations that really make you smile or laugh out loud in some instances! Everything is described in a placid irony, very funny and "British style" , where the author is simply a guinea-pig, at the mercy of the next healer.<br /><br />It will be up to the reader to find out if the author is finally able to get rid of his backache, or if it is at all possible to combine modern technology with spirituality. One thing is for sure. You shall be involved in a truly fascinating journey. I think that describing certain experiences might have represented a sort of relief for the author, something comforting even. Truly a book not to be missed. The narrative is quick, rich in detail, funny, ironic, moving at times. Page after page, it is impossible to put down, you shall read it all in one go.<br /><br />My true vote (if I could): 10 Amazon stars. You will not be able to put it down.<br /><br />I am a rabid Jane Austen fan, and Pride and Prejudice is, to my mind, the best book ever written. There is something about Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy that bores into the soul and won't let go. I can never get enough of them. That being said, it was a long time before I was able to read any of the sequels, adaptations, variations, or modernizations of Austen's masterpiece without having fits of pique over what I saw as blasphemous renderings of her story and characters. I was, to put it simply, a strict purist.<br /><br />But eventually I realized that if I wanted to take any pleasure in these books, I had to judge them on their own merit. Jane Austen is dead. She will not be rendering her own variations. Once I accepted this, I found that I enjoyed many of the novels based on my favorite characters. My initial favorites were the variations that took Austen's characters and regency setting in various directions.<br /><br />Later, I decided to give the modernizations a chance, and much to my surprise, I found many of them to be excellent.<br /><br />When I first saw this title, I will admit that I avoided I for som time. Lizzy in the desert? Falling for an Arab sheik? The setting didn't appeal to me, nor did the potential cultural differences or the idea of Lizzy falling for anyone other than Mr. Darcy. I just couldn't<br />wrap my mind around the concept. But finally, I gave in and bought the book; my only regret is that I waited so long to read it.<br /><br />Once I picked up this novel, I didn't put it down until I had finished it. The story is fascinating and very well written, the characters appealing, and the chemistry between the hero an heroine absolutely dynamic. Menon <br>Given the backdrop of structural change that seems required in the global economy this book is well timed in presenting a discussion of the role of the state, both from a historical perspective as well as a theoretical perspective. The author having previously worked in the Italian government as well as being an academic is very well suited to discuss both practical and theoretical aspects of political economy. The book starts with a brief introduction and then is split into 4 main sections including a historical review of the state, theoretical issues, practical analysis and ends with a perspective on the future.<br /><br />The author begins with an analysis of the history of the state. He includes an analysis of economic theorists in particular Adam Smith and his views on common misconceptions. The author analyzes the pattern of government spending and its evolution. In particular how the growth of the state coincided with the growth of the need for state services and resource management (for example world war I). He discusses the catalysts of economic change that created a need for a modern state that was distinctly different from the historical one touching upon the industrial revolution and the great depression. The author also discusses the changes in spending patterns of the state and the growth of the request for social safety that coincided with the democratization of the government.<br /><br />The author then discusses the theory of political economy. This discusses what the potential roles for government are. It briefly discusses monopolistic states (where the state is used as a vehicle for self promotion of those empowered), individualistic states (where the state exists to serve as a voice for the individual), paternalistic states in the vein of Plato's republic, and communal states where the community is more than the sum of its parts (where protecting culture becomes a goal for example). The author continues on to discuss the social contract and its role in how government operates. He discusses Northern Europe idea generated in the 50s about determining economic efficiency via social welfare functions and output sensitivities to input costs. The author finishes the section discussing the tools at a governments disposal, in particular spending and taxing power and regulatory power.<br /><br />Getting into the actual outcomes of state intervention, the author continues using the Northern European methodology to examine policy effectiveness. It is found to have diminishing returns. Social protection is analyzed and again Northern europe is analzyed in case study, in particular, Sweden. One gets strong evidence of the disincentives to productivity growth based on high levels of taxation and the diminishing returns to social spending. At the same time, the sensitivies of both of these are a function of cultural homogeneity and perceptions of free rider problems.<br /><br />The author ends the book with his perspectives on the future and how the role of government should change to the changing world we live in. The author is a skeptic of a large paternalistic state and believes that the governments roles are to regulate markets and let private competition be the source of growth rather than governments fill the role of markets with failures. Given the externalities of many markets the author does not believe prices act as signals in many modern day industries and information asymmetries need to be fixed by the state. Government versus Markets is a good overview of a subject which will no doubt be a major topic of discussion in the coming decades. On the one hand, the welfare state seems to have become unsustainable and requires deep structural change to provide the populations that reside within them the opportunities that they deserve but at the same time small government reduces the voice of the community in an increasingly globalized world. The book is worth reading though often the writing is unclear. I think the content is interesting but the drawbacks are it can be difficult to read and some things seem to run on. All in all, the subject is of extreme importance, the writing could be perfected.</p> <p>7 of 7 people found the following review helpful.<br> Which Viable Role for Governments in a Globalizing Economy? <br> By Serge J. Van Steenkiste <br>Vito Tanzi provides a balanced overview of the evolving economic role that the government has played in a democratic country with a market economy. This examination is particularly timely in the current economic environment. Mr. Tanzi focuses most of his attention on developed countries.<br /><br />The growth of the tax burden of major countries and the level of public spending expressed as a percentage of GDP, has been steep, especially since 1913 (pp. 9; 12; 63; 305). For example, the general government expenditures of the U.S. were equal to 36.6% of the GDP in 2007 (i.e., before the current great recession) vs. 7.5% in 1913 (p. 9). This growth was fueled by a sharp increase in the size of governments, which found its origin in factors such as particular events (wars, Great Depression), changes in the structure of the economies, the universal suffrage, and urbanization (pp. 65-68; 77; 85-89; 93-94; 229; 305).<br /><br />The goals of the government mentioned above cover three distinct functions:<br /><br />1. Resource allocation. Think for example about the financing of large infrastructures or some essential administrative functions. No organized society can exist without this goal being satisfied to some extent, setting therefore a minimum role of the state and a minimum level of public spending. This government function has taken a back seat to the other two government functions since the second half of the 20th century. Unsurprisingly, the ongoing deterioration of the U.S. infrastructure has been happening during this period;<br />2. Redistribution of income. Much of the increase in public spending in the past half century finds its source in this function that progressively changed from redistributing income across income groups towards protecting (most or all) citizens against particular risks with economic consequences. This shift changed some government functions from selective to universal, making them very expensive. Think for example about health benefits for the U.S.;<br />3. Stabilization of the economy a.k.a. fiscal policy. Increases in spending, enacted during slowdown or recessionary periods, were not neutralized by reductions in spending during periods of recovery. Think for example about the evolution of U.S. spending since the National Bureau of Economic Research declared officially the end of the recession in June 2009 (pp. 63-64; 83; 88-89; 100-103; 116-123; 126; 136; 170; 253-254; 307; 331).<br /><br />Mr. Tanzi observes that these three functions are no longer country specific. They have an increasingly important global component in today's world. Think for example about the protection of the environment, regulation of global financial markets, terrorism, or international migration (pp. 129-145; 308-311; 325-329). The author rightly calls governments to concentrate their activity on prevention rather on ex post repair or correction (pp. 184; 188; 220-221; 316). The U.S. Federal Reserve comes to mind in the run-up to the ongoing economic downturn (pp. 135; 139; 189; 216).<br /><br />Mr. Tanzi also shows convincingly that higher public spending, beyond a given level, does not necessarily result in higher welfare as measured by the Human Development Index (pp. 232; 234). To boost their flagging economic performance, Scandinavian countries, which are held as examples of mature welfare states, implemented structural reforms and large cuts in public spending and in tax rates in the 1990s and 2000s while keeping the lowest Gini coefficients and the lowest poverty rates (pp. 27; 235; 267; 296).<br /><br />To his credit, Mr. Tanzi explains clearly that the ultimate size of the welfare state depends on someone's values. Whoever gives more weight to equity and poverty reduction tends to focus on the positive outcomes of the welfare state and to minimize its costs. Whoever gives more weight to efficiency and the economic freedom of individuals, and less to equity, tends to focus more on the costs of the welfare state (pp. 11; 17-18; 206-207; 268; 305-306). There is indeed no optimal level of public spending because the needs of the population and groups able to organize politically are "infinite" (pp. 32; 306).<br /><br />Developed economies have access to different instruments to provide social protection to their respective populations:<br /><br />1. Publicly financed programs which consist of either cash transfers such as unemployment compensation and pension, or the provision of in-kind social services such as day care and training and assistance in finding jobs, to individuals and families. These programs are financed by either general taxes or specific contributions generally based on wages of workers in the official economy;<br />2. Tax expenditures used in place of direct pubic spending to reduce the cost of (supposedly) beneficial expenditures such as education, health, and housing for individuals who pay income taxes;<br />3. Various regulations imposed on workers and enterprises to encourage, or oblige them to buy, or provide some protection. Think for example about the provision of loans or loan guarantees to some categories;<br />4. Charity that can be stimulated or subsidized through the tax system (pp. 208-216; 252-254; 257-259; 262; 308).<br /><br />The use of these various instruments depends on the cultural preferences of the citizens and policy makers and on the control that each government has on these policy instruments. Anglo-Saxon countries make more use of tax expenditures than public spending compared to some continental European countries, resulting in a reduced spending capacity of governments (pp. 97; 263). Therefore, Anglo-Saxon countries have to be more vigilant that social benefits go to the poorest social classes that get little or no benefits from tax expenditures (p. 263). Surprisingly, the U.S. makes much less use of income testing, resulting in social benefits seen more as entitlements than in other Anglo-Saxon countries such as Australia and Canada (pp. 260-261).<br /><br />Finally, Mr. Tanzi emphasizes that the growing complexity in the conduct of economic and especially fiscal policy is likely to become the most significant issue in governmental operations in the future. If not checked, it will lead to "state capture" by the people with more resources or to a popular backlash that will challenge the market economy (pp. 330-332).
