Superb analysis

Fischer presents a detailed and trenchant look at the problems of historical explanation in this fine book. It is certainly one of the best history books I've ever read, although it's not a history book per se, since it's really a critique of the different explanations historians use. Fischer discusses probably about a hundred or more of these, so you probably won't be able to remember them all, but if nothing else, you'll be more alert to the more common and egregious types of historical errors, and overall, the book is a useful analysis and reminder of the problems and difficulties of writing history. In that regard, it's still a very interesting and worthwhile book.
Some of the fallacies I already knew from philosophy, such as the pathetic fallacy, the fallacy of composition, the post hoc fallacy, and so on, which are already well known. But then there are plenty of others with more abstruse names, such as the "the fallacy of the hypostatized proof." My one complaint enters here, since Fischer would have benefited from a knowledge of logic and philosophy, since he sometimes gives names to fallacies that are well known in logic and philosophy by a different name.
But overall, this is one of the best books on the methods and philosophy of history I've read, and it should probably be required reading for every student of history and professional historian alike.

An Indispensable Book for the Serious Writer

I've read this book cover to cover once and dipped into it on average once a month over the ten years since I first found it. It sits on my shelf with my other "correctives", such as Orwell's "Politics and the English Language". Fischer makes the same points about rhetoric as Orwell at greater length and with far more wit. But, Orwell is the better writer.
Yes, as one reviewer says, Fischer rants a bit, but amusingly and with dead-on quotations from his victims. One will think twice about the errors Fischer cites, if for no other reason than to avoid Fischer's next edition.
Fischer is quite even handed. The first felon he cites was a professor of mine -- and Fischer's -- as an undergraduate. A more generous critic and historian -- and human being -- one won't find. But there he is.
I cannot think of a better gift for anyone who takes persuasive prose seriously. No writer should be without it.

A Critical Analysis

David Hackett Fischer's thesis is that there is a tacit and analyzable logic of historical thought and that historians can improve their historical thinking by applying this logic to their work. Historians' Fallacies is a successful attempt to make history a discipline better governed by reason. Fischer notes that history is mainly a problem-solving discipline; the historian asks pertinent questions and then develops a logical paradigm to answer them. He acknowledges that history will never be an exact science but it is his goal, by a careful examination of common historical fallacies, to develop a type of logic. Method is necessary in history, and logic makes a method more rigorous and useful. The historian must follow rules to write good, "scientific," history.
Fischer reveals his ultimate goal in his conclusion. He discusses the goals of history and makes an eloquent apology for the historian. He astutely notes that social scientists have never found a justification for history, making illogical arguments to justify their interest in the past. Calling history "fun," saying that history should be studied because it "is there," and stating "everyone needs to know facts" are three poor reasons for a defense of history. Likewise, claiming history provides a creative outlet and that it could prove useful for the future are spurious speculations, at best.
Fischer's apology of history explains that as history becomes more logical, it becomes more useful to society. History can clarify the contexts of contemporary social problems and can help with forecasting, allowing us to discuss future issues before they arrive. History offers theoretical knowledge, helping social scientists understand past conditions that best brought, say, stability and peace. A recognition of these conditions could help calm today's times. History helps people understand who they are, and by giving them an identity, frees them from the tyranny of the short-sighted present. Most importantly, history helps people conceptualize today's problems in today's terms. Effective solutions to problems in the past could well prove disastrous if applied to similar problems today, and an understanding of history lessens this threat. Logical history is necessary to useful history; the two are inseparable.
Fischer's self-proclaimed reason for writing this book was the lack of logical analysis in history. He believes that many historians hold a bizarre hatred towards logic, known as "misology." Despite this anti-intellectual attitude by historians, the use of history as an academic discipline and a social science demands a logical and scientific approach. The analytical philosophy of history is helpful for developing historical thought, but insufficient to actually create the logic that historians need. Fischer takes that next step in his book.
Fischer explains his thesis by taking the reader through the three major steps of a historian's method: inquiry, explanation, and argument. Inquiry begins every legitimate historical endeavor. Thus, the historian must seek to ask questions in the right way, while carefully verifying significant facts. The field of explanation consists of generalizations, narration, causation, motivation, composition, and false analogy. Finally, within the field of argument, there are fallacies of semantical distortion and fallacies of substantive distraction. In each category he discusses various fallacies, often in great detail. His book discusses over one hundred different logical fallacies, and he does not discriminate among giving specific examples from a vast variety of works. These specific examples make logical ideas that seem abstract at first easy to understand. At the end of each chapter, Fischer follows the logical messes by a clean-up attempt where he briefly writes suggestions towards methods that are more logical than those of the historians he has attacked.
A narrow thesis binds the book together, but history is not lacking in poor historians, so the examples come from all of Western history, keeping the reader involved. Fischer's prose is crisp and he tends to throw in delightful phrases to keep the tone light, such as, "a rathole of metaphysical speculation," or a "literary monstrosity." His use of specific and amusing examples prevent the vast number of logical terms from becoming tedious. No holds are barred: Fischer holds high standards for the historian-and rightly so, judging from his presuppositions-and he expects history to be logical and done in a correct manner. This book probably made him few friends, for he attacks contemporaries in his field with the same vigor that he attacks the virulent racist of ages past.
Fisher's major contribution, however, does not come from his deconstruction of others' historical analyses, though this is the majority of the book. At the end of each chapter, he includes concise summaries that offer advice to the historian wanting to avoid the previous logical fallacies. His deconstruction is vital to actually view bad history in progress. But his constructive suggestions are excellent for those who would write good history. His summaries are excellent in understanding exactly what he wants from a logical historical thought. Historians who consciously use his positive suggestions, while avoiding the logical fallacies he mentions will find themselves on the right track to creating works with significance. A sound and logical structure is necessary is history. Too many problems occurred in the past because of a misconstrued construction of previous events, and Fischer takes a giant step towards limiting the same mistakes.

Real cracking stuff

Foote, alias Jim, former Soviet spy narrates his experiences working for Red Army Intelligence. Firstly, he says how he came to be recruited into the network.This was effected by a woman known by her cover name ` Sonia". Foote succumbed to the charms of Communism at an young age and volunteered to serve in the International Brigade fighting in Spain fighting to save the Republican government from Franco's fascist forces.

Book is filled with several interesting anecdotes of which a few are striking. As international crisis sharpened Centre in Moscow could not bring agents for training. So Foote says he had to learn all the necessary skills to perform his role as a spy of his own account . So he self taught radio telegraphy, microphotography, secret inks, sabotage. Foote managed to bluff Swiss authorities into staying in an apartment where he rigged an aerial for his transmitter for communication with Moscow. Both practices were forbidden for foreigners seeking asylum in Switzerland.

Author had a tough time establishing contact with Centre; host of technical details to be taken care of. Foote has explained the difficulties he experienced while doing so. It represented a challenge to a novice . Communication forms an important component of spy network and also its Achilles heel. Author has not been able solve the mystery surrounding Werther. Post war CIA study has done it partially. It represented group of top ranking officers of German High Command who loathed Nazi regime and some of whom were involved in a abortive plot to assassinate Fuehrer. Another point to note speed with which information was reaching Moscow made Soviets to distrust this source. According to author operational decisions were known 24 hrs of it being taken at appropriate HQ's in Berlin. Author has argued this intelligence bonanza helped Soviet regime to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

It was interesting to read how the Swiss discovered the activities of Soviet spy ring. Author is amazed even after its discovery Swiss authorities refused to take action even though latter's actions flouted Swiss neutrality laws. Today we why was this so. For the first time readers are given a glimpse of life inside iron curtain.He also has harsh words for Centre whose actions he condemns as cynical. Agents are used and then discarded without any consideration. So he decided to quit, for he by this time was utterly disillusioned by Communism. Soviet actions author found to his dismay were no different from those of other Capitalist powers.

I'm glad that author chose to share information with posterity on his life as a Soviet spy. The book contains no source material. Author wrote it down when his memory of what he did remained clear and fresh. Many authors have drawn information from this work to write their epic histories of Soviet secret services. Text is very colorful littered with French and Latin words that often I had to use online resources available to check its meaning. This book is best read in unison V.E Tarrant `s work Red Orchestra.

One of the best books on spying vintage WW2. It was first published years ago but is still relevant. It is also another reason counter intelligece agencies focused on those who fought in Spain for the Republic.

It truly is a handbook for spies

I read recently where someone in the secret service - or somewhere like that, I believe, said all you have to do is to read Handbook for Spies to learn everything you need to know about how to be a spy. As it was written in 1949 I was a bit skeptical. So I decided to read it - not that I intend to become a spy. Not only was it written in 1949 but it takes place during WW II - and even before. While some of the technology is obviously dated, its basic organizational principles ring true and would seem to me to be relevant even today. Well written and organized - although I got a bit lost sometimes with all of the names. And it's all (mostly) true!

Interesting & fun read!

This book contains several interviews with Foreign Wives (non-Asian) & Japanese Husband couples. It gave plenty of insights into the positives & negatives of a cross-cultural marriage; particularly with a Japanese husband! I thought this was a good read as I'm currently in this type of relationship. I empathized with most of the women interviewed and admire how many have successful marriages and careers. It also helped me understand my husband a bit more! Definitely gives a good insight for those who might be interested in Japanese culture & relationships with Japanese men.

Yes, it can work

I'm a Western woman married to a Japanese man. I found this book interesting since it focuses on this kind of (still unusual) relationship. It's a quick read---fairly short---and is comprised of Q&A interviews with the women of these mixed unions. I wish there had been more "story" to the book, but I did enjoy reading it.

Fascinating look at cross-cultural relationships!

I loved Marriage in Translation and the variety of women interviewed in the piece. Each woman, coming from places like the US, Europe or Australia, all had fascinating stories to tell and gave detailed insight on Eastern/Western cultural differences and similarities, including ideas with Japanese terminology that have no direct English translation. I learned a lot from these interviews and would recommend this book to anyone interested in Japanese culture!

Hyper-detailed instructions—with full color, easy-to-read and understand illustrations—help budding enthusiasts navigate EV3 Kits with clear language and step-by-step directions. Readers learn the basics of assembling a simple robot before being introduced to various programming tricks to be used on the EV3 Brick, the colloquial term for the Mindstorms mini-computer. Be forewarned that in order to take full advantage of the programming functionality of the kit, including the ablity to create and edit programs, users must have a computer to connected to their EV3 Brick (though basic programming on the EV3 Brick can be done without one). Each chapter contains several short challenges, dubbed "discoveries," which are cleverly accompanied by a legend: whimsical gear wheels represent the estimated amount of building time; tiny Microsoft Windows-esque blocks show the expected level of programming expertise; and a small clock estimates the length of time it should take to solve the challenge. Perfect intro to Lego robotics

I got the EV3 for my 7 year old son as soon as it came out. By accident, we ended up with the educational version. The instructions provided were not clear enough to get us easily up and running. I started buying other EV3 books. They generally assumed that one had done Mindstorms previously. I just did not have time to help my son figure the thing out, and it sat in a box for months.

Then this book arrived. We are up and running, and my son is engrossed and so am I. The author gives terrific detail, and has small projects scattered through each chapter to help develop understanding of each of the features. We work through a few pages each evening, and do one or two projects (e.g., program the EV3 to do a figure 8). These projects are perfect.

As to the educational version vs the home version..... I splurged and got the expansion set. It turns out that this just has a lot of Technics-type structural pieces. It does not have new motors or sensors. The educational packs has all of the motors and sensors of the home version with two exceptions: the remote control sensor and related beacon. I got those thru the lego site. There may be a few add'l pieces that we'll need in the future to build all of the projects in this book, but we are 1/4 the way thru and haven't found them.

I'd also refer you to the book's website, which has a lot of useful information. The author has also kindly responded to specific questions (relating to education vs home versions), and has been quite helpful. So...can't recommend this more enough. I recommend it to all home users as well as school clubs.

Great book for EV3 and programming!

This is a great book. We have only begun, but it is already fantastic. It is not only information, but it is also a tutorial. The book includes 132 practice modules spread throughout the chapters which allow for an iterative process of learning. Additionally, the book contains 30 design modules that allow you to learn building techniques. My two sons and I (ages 9 and 11) are separately going through the book and practice/design modules with each of us tracking our progress on a tracking sheet. We do the modules individually and then collaborate to see how each of us is accomplishing the task. It's great, but it does still require you to think ahead and be organized. Just by completing a module, you don't necessarily become an expert on that topic. You will find that you will still need to play around with the features to better understand how they work. The first module that will test your understanding of previously introduced capability is Discovery Module #8 which tells you to have your EV3 make a figure 8. I was able to do it with four blocks (in the downloaded EV3 programming software from Lego).
Great book for learning how to use your EV3 and for learning how to program.

Not interesting to my sports & art focused 10 year old

We bought this as a Christmas present for our 10 tear old grandson, having bought the Mindstorms EV3 robotic kit the year before. (https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-6029291-Mindstorms-EV3-31313/dp/B00CWER3XY/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MC1JTP8QH6VEFWKKD024) He never was interested in the kit; we thought this book would peak his interest. It didn't.

They looked fascinating to me, but his interests just don't go that way. Maybe when he is older.
