This book contains a secret I thought I only knew about ! find it and you will be successful

I was not planning on reading the book as soon as I purchased it due to my long list of books to read. I said I will just read the first few pages, as soon as I started reading I got hooked and stayed up late. I still did not finish reading the book and I usually don't give reviews before completing the book but as soon as I reached page 42, the last two lines of that page contain a secret that I thought I only knew about that secret changes the universe laws to work on your favor and make you a successful entrepreneur. No matter what you are going through, no matter what obstacles you are facing, that secret in page 42 last two lines will open the doors of Rizq for you!

I'm really glad to see a book on these topics ie: entrepreneurship & self-development from the islamic point of view in ENGLISH! I've been lately reading some books about these issues but as a muslim, I felt there was something missing... Since Islam is really a way of life that does not limit itself to rituals and sprirituality, but rather encompasses all others areas of this wordly life such as business in this case, having this resource on how to build the proper mindset and practices towards success is much needed for muslim entrepreneurs. I think, this is a great contribution to this ummah, and hope that there will be more initiatives in the future from the author or others for more books in this topic.

Promises a lot- -doesn�t quite deliver

This book is an overview textbook of information visualization techniques. The first chapter is very enticing- -it describes many visualization problems, and provides some historical examples of specific visualization techniques of the past. The rest of the book takes up assorted topics such as representation, internal models, and connectivity, and provides some examples of visualization techniques. Unfortunately, the text is too concise to be used for independent study. I found myself puzzled over how to interpret most of the new visualization techniques. For most of the techniques, Spence provides little or no guidance about interpretation, and few suggestions about how to make effective use of the techniques. An instructor who is a specialist in the subject would presumably be able to provide the missing information, but readers who pick up this book on their own might not be able to gain the information they are seeking. The publisher has also developed a companion Website for the book, with exercises and answers, dynamic examples, and OHPs for classroom use. It would have been nice, however, to also provide the materials on a CD-ROM for users who do not have continuous broadband access to the Net.

An easy and useful read for anybody who deals with data

The book provides an overview of the methods and principles behind the presentation of information. I am not an expert in this area but I found that contents were easy to grasp and understand. This makes the book suitable for anybody who wants an easy to read introduction to the topic of information visualisation.
The book is written in in the first person and in such a way that it is in no way a task to read it and the extensive use of accompanying diagrams adds further to the ease of absorbing what is written. It is hard to imagine how you could not find at least one item that is of value or interest to you if you ever have to deal with data of some sort.
Chapter 9 provides many techniques to aid in the development of optimised reliable designs that would be found interesting by any design engineer. The examples that are used throughout the book are remarkably varied which as mentioned earlier would make this book interesting or of value to anybody who has to deal with data and its presentation.

Read Tufte again instead

I'd really like to give the book one single star, the reason being that its title 'Information Visualization' puts greater demand on the way the book illustrates its concepts and thoughts. As the exhibits are often ugly, data-poor and most of the times situated on different pages than the text that refers to them (seems to me an absolute basic in this discipline), the reading of the book is not enjoyable but rather painful. Compare this to any of the works of Tufte.
The text is also not written with care (again, compare with Tufte), but instead in a (not very literate) over-scholarly fashion. Take, for example, this reference from page 146: "The World Wide Web is of enormous size and complexity (Bray, 1996)".
It gets a two-star rating because it actually compiles a number of computerized visualization models (when reading, skip the descriptions of the non-computerized - they lack analysis and insight) which can provide a starting point for further exploration of the field. However, I am in no way assured that this compilation is the best one, or even a very good one. I'll keep looking.

I loved this book

I have to speak up, because I feel that this book is being unfairly trashed. I stumbled across one of the chapters of this book in a collection, and I was so taken aback that I had to rush out and get the complete novel. I think that that Jamaica Kincaid's writing is so beautiful and poetic that she could be writing about anything and I would read it. But she also tells a very interesting and important story. Xuela is a mixed-race, motherless girl who does not receive love from anyone, and must survive by loving and celebrating her self. Perhaps for those people who have always felt secure in their place in life, and surrounded by love on all sides, Kincaid's book is too harsh and hard to relate to. But for those of us who have had times we when we felt so alone that we literally had to become our own mother and/or our own best friend, Kincaid's novel is a testimony to our experience. A great book.

Controversial, disturbing, not for everyone.

Having read this title while vacationing in Jamaica, (even though placed in Dominica and the author grew up in Atigua)I was entirely able to understand Xuela. Many children are born out of wedlock, though the fathers still are involved with their children. Xuela is an extreme, but not implausible, case of emotional detachment. Everything in the book, from her father's corruption, to encountering the stevedore during a downpour came to life in my reading experience. Be forewarned, Xuela is not a likeable character, and her physical self-love may be offensive to some readers. But Jamaica Kincaid's blunt and honest portrayal of a hardened woman is undeniably hard to forget.

pretty writing - imagery not meant to be pretty

I think more readers should read this in context of Jamaica Kincaid's own personal life, especially regarding her torn relationship with her mother. It would then become extremely touching, as Kincaid really writes this to save her own living. While other reviewers have found this book to be harsh or dirty in some sense, we should gain the sense that this narrator is really at a loss for love, that there is so little to love, but was able to find love in herself.
