Grade 6-9 - Essentially a graphic novel without the graphics, this book (the first of five) should have broad appeal to readers who love computer games and Japanese anime. As the story begins, five orphans, being raised as foster brothers and Buddhist monks in 17th-century China, are hiding in a large water jar as imperial forces, led by their renegade older brother, Ying, attack and slaughter their temple's residents. Grandmaster has given the boys animal names and has trained each of them in a martial-arts style related to his titular animal's strengths. He intends the five to escape, even if everyone else dies. Fu - the "tiger" - is this book's main character; in addition to remaining free, he is determined to reclaim the valuable ancient training scrolls that Ying has taken from the temple. Fu finds friends in unexpected places and learns to control the impulses he has fought against all of his life. Teens are likely to warm to the implicit theme that each person has a particular destiny, an inborn sense of identity that must be brought to light. While quite a page-turner, employing slapstick humor from time to time in true manga style, Tiger is nonetheless an adventure story and not a more serious work of finding one's self and one's place in the world. As the book begins, the boys are hidden in a water barrel during a raid on their temple. The emperor's army, under the command of their former brother, Ying, the Eagle, is out to destroy the Cangzhen Monastery, kill the grandmaster, and steal the sacred scrolls. Impetuous Fu rescues the scrolls, but his own rash act leads to imprisonment in a remote village. Although set in 1650 China, this is a kung fu novel, not historical fiction, and despite the grandmaster's peace-seeking Buddhist philosophy, Tiger is not for the squeamish, as Ying is a terrifying villain and "bloodstained flesh dangles" during violent battles. Characters are virtuous or evil, but the slam-bang, pedal-to-the-metal adventure stands a good chance of luring kids away from video games; they will definitely line up for the forthcoming sequel. Fantastic Debut

I bought TIGER for my eight-year-old son, and he absolutely loved it. So far, his reading tastes have included the Bionicle books, Lemony Snicket's novels, Magic Tree House adventures, and the old Boxcar Children series, but in the Five Ancestors, he's found a new favorite. This was the first book my son read from cover to cover, on his own, in the space of eight hours. He was so absorbed in reading TIGER that he barely wanted to stop for food or bathroom breaks. We're so excited to have discovered Jeff Stone!

An Action Packed Kung Fu Adventure

Cangzhen Temple is one of the most renowned temples in China and home to five unique teens. Each is the master of a particular style of Kung Fu and their skills are put to the test when their Temple is destroyed by Ying, a former student of the temple. This is the first of a planned five book series and follows Fu, master of the tiger style of Kung Fu, as he attempts to find a way to defeat Ying and get the 5 scrolls of ancient Kung Fu wisdom that Ying now has. Fu is a ferocious fighter and has an equally volcanic temper. The action starts quickly, grabbing the read from page one, and runs throughout this book. Readers will be hard-pressed not to want to immediately pick-up Monkey the second book in the series.

Whew! Exciting!

Tiger, Jeff Stone's children's adventure story, is the first of a series about five young warrior monks in 17th century China.

The cover has a powerful illustration and raised lettering of the Chinese characters for tiger. It's a "wow" book from the cover to the too-quick ending.

Author Stone paints some amazingly clear pictures of these young monks and their kung fu fighting. I felt like I was in the midst of every fight, and in every perilous predicament.

Fu, also known as Tiger, is 12 years old, like his four monk brothers. They survive an attack on their secret temple by an evil 16-year-old monk. When Tiger and the other young monks realize that everyone has been massacred, they know they must hunt down and regain possession of the temple's scrolls. Why? The scrolls contained special kung fu fighting techniques only known to those monks.

Each monk takes on the persona of his corresponding animal, and future books in the series will be called Crane, Monkey, Dragon and Snake. Young readers will enjoy the energetic fight scenes, the young monk's cunning, and most of all, their commitment to each other and their grandmaster.

Children who are involved in the martial arts will immediately become fans and will love every moment in this page-turning book. I can't wait for the next one due in September 2005.

Warning from this reviewer: It's been eons since I've read to a child, or been involved in their video games, so I don't know what level of violence is acceptable. I was a bit taken aback by the graphic violence in the book. It is geared to 8-to-12-year olds but I think it should be 10-12.

Gregory L. Krauss, M.D., is a professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Robert S. Fisher, M.D., Ph.D., is the Maslah Saul, M.D., Professor of Neurology and director of the Stanford Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is past president of the American Epilepsy Society. Peter W. Kaplan, M.B.B.S., F.R.C.P.(Lon.), is a professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and director of the EEG/Epilepsy program at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Excellent EEG primer. DVD does not work on Mac.

MAC USERS BEWARE: INCLUDED DVD DOES NOT WORK ON MAC. IT'S COMPILED ONLY FOR WINDOWS.
Except for this trivial issue which, according to customer service and technical support, "cannot be fixed" (??), this book is really an excellent EEG primer, with a lot of examples, clearly written and suitable for all levels of training, from the real beginning to more advanced interpretations.
Overall 4 stars because without the DVD this book becomes a "not-at-all-interactive training guide".
Bottom line dedicated to Johns Hopkins University Press IT experts: folks please, start considering cyber-etiquette and treat Mac and Windows users equally (we're in 2012, after all).

Worst installation experience in many years of computer experience. EEG content dated and digital offerings marginal.

I would have expected a prestigious institution like Johns Hopkins to put out an exceptional product. The installation was a complete disaster on both a Win 7 professional and a Win 8.1 system. In both cases I am unable to copy the files to the hard drive (an option offered but which always produces an error message that I have the wrong DVD for this version - requesting a fix for this brought a replacement DVD, which produced the same error) so I have to run the files and videos from the DVD, meaning I have to carry an external optical drive when using my Surface Pro3.

The additional software that must be installed (Persyst Insight, etc.) has links provided that are supposed to initiate installation but which are broken and do not lead to an actual installation. I had to find the files on the DVD and install manually for each of the three programs on both Windows platforms. In two cases this led to error messages within the installations and I had to go to each program's web site to download current versions, which then installed correctly.

The actual content is good though somewhat limited on the DVD. The quality of the printed book is OK but many of the pages were not trimmed and needed to be cut apart at bottom or top by hand. All in all a dismal offering from such a reputable organization. I should have known I guess - a stodgy old institution may have trouble truly embracing the digital age. Their digital rendering of EEG information is clumsy at best. To expect a smooth and well designed installation sequence and well constructed digital content was clearly a mistake on my part.

Good but there are a few problems

I just started using this for part of my clinical neurophysiology board review. I am mainly going to address the DVD, which is the main reason I purchased this. But I have read some of the paper text (which also seems to be on the DVD) and it is quite well done. But the DVD presents some problems. I am running Windows 8.1 so perhaps the DVD could not have accounted for some of the changes in Windows. The basic program installed OK but then it asked me to install Persyst (an EEG reading program) and Harmonie, an additional EEG program. It said that these were important to get the full benefit of the book. They did not install from the link. So I started using the program with them. I then got a choice to run the DVD files from the DVD or to install them onto my computer. Naturally I wanted to install them onto my computer. That did not work either. It gave me the message "The DVD inserted is for a different version. Please insert the DVD to this version and restart this application (20130305.22!=20121203.22). Ok. I guess I can't install them onto my computer. This message makes no sense. This is the only DVD that came with the book. "This version" of the program comes from that DVD. So how can the DVD be "for a different version?"

Well, I wanted to use the program. So I went through some of it. The "Chapters" portion pretty much presented the book chapters. The printable EEG report sheet did not work but most of the features did.

The “Read EEG” part is an audio visual tutorial. It probably uses Flash or some other common program. It works though the quality of the images is a bit poor---somewhat blurry. But it is a very good tutorial. I have almost finished the whole thing. “View EEG” is an atlas. But unlike an atlas in a book, you can open it in the Persyst Insight program (which did not install). “Learn EEG” has various parts. The “video review” part has various videos of patients in monitoring units. These seem good. This is where one needs the Harmonie program, which also did not install. One needs Harmonie to see their EEGs.

So I needed to install those programs. I found instructions on a PDF file on the disk. I followed the instructions and manually (more or less manually) installed the programs. It was not totally manually. I found the installer on the disk and the installer did the rest. The Harmonie gives a registry error when installed but the pdf said to ignore it.
Once I installed the programs I could use Persyst Insight on the “View EEG” atlas. But here’s the catch. All you get is a 30 day trial version. After 30 days I need to buy my own copy of Persyst. This is one of those programs that does not even list a cost. You have to ask for a quote. This is for a hospital or a clinic to buy. I have not yet asked for a quote. I do not expect it to be cheap. So part of the usability of this book will last only for 30 days. Harmonie seems to work on the “video review” though each time I use it it notifies me of the registry error. But it works anyway. Just a bit of an annoyance.

All in all this is a good quality product, especially as far as the actual EEG material and teaching is concerned. The software integration, however, leaves something to be desired. And I think it is unfair to sell a book that one can only use fully for 30 days without buying an additional expensive product. Of course, I have not had it for 30 days, so perhaps the Insight program will continue to work. It is possible that the date checker may have been disabled.

I will still give it four stars.

About the Author
Anne Frye earned a BA in Holistic Midwifery in 1979. She has taught, written, and provided consultation services for midwives for the past 28 years. She has authored four textbooks written from the perspective of a midwife in homebirth practice. Her other titles include Understanding Diagnostic Tests in the Childbearing Year: A Holistic Approach, Holistic Midwifery: Vol. II: Care during Labor and Birth, and Healing Passage: A Midwife's Guide to the Care and Repair of the Tissues Involved in Birth (currently out of print and being revised).

A review for those who aren't midwifes...

This is a wonderful text. Unfortunately it is in a soft cover, unlike vol. 2 which is hard cover, but that aside, it is wonderful.

I am a first-time mom who is planning an unattended home birth. Because of various problems I've also ended up without prenatal care so this volume has proven invaluable to me!! It is clear and exhaustive. This volume has a lot of information directed exclusively for midwives (philosophy of midwivery, how to set up a practice, how to work with different kinds of women, initiating contact and establishing care, etc.), but there is plenty of information useful to "do-it-yourself" prenatal care. It covers what to do during a prenatal exam during each trimester, special circumstances, problems that can occur during pregnancy and information on conditions that might preexist pregnancy.

There is a good section that explains anatomy and physiology that you need to know and I found it easy for me, as a non-medical/non-scientific person, to understand. The index is very thorough.

If you are buying the second volume and aren't sure you should get this one I would recommend that you do get this one because the second volume says that you should review the anatomy and physiology covered in the first volume since it doesn't repeat it and the foundation is essential to understanding the information in the second volume. (If you have medical/midwivery training it may not be so necessary, but then you might appreciate the text for other reasons).

Overall I'd say that if you plan an unattended birth and want to be as informed and safe as possible it is very worthwhile to purchase this volume as well as the second volume and invaluable if you are doing your own prenatal care. If nothing else it can give guidance on when you need to seek a healthcare professional. If you have an attendant then it may only be useful to you if you like to know everything and are willing to pay this much. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it to the non-midwife.

Oh, don't let the term "Holistic" throw you. It gives in-depth medical information as well as giving some alternative medicine information. My husband is a bio-chemist researcher and has worked as a nurse; he is very pleased with the scientific information in this volume and the next.

If I had to choose one book on pregnancy and birth from my bookshelf (a very hard pick!), this would be the one. Although not aimed at the general public, women planning a natural birth would find authoritative and invaluable information in this book. Midwife Anne Frye uses her own experience and midwifery wisdom as well as a thorough but critical look at the medical research in the subjects that she addresses. She brings, to my mind, the best of medical research with a holistic and gentle approach. I'm looking forward to Volume 2!

The best midwifery text available!

I am a 2nd year, bachelor of Midwifey student in New Zealand. "Holistic Midwifery" along with Anne Fryes "Understanding Diagnostics" were required texts for our degree program. Both of these books together are priceless! I have read both from cover to cover (over several weeks in my summer holidays!)and am amazed with Anne's fabulous ability to cover issues thoroughly with depth and understanding that rivals any academic author. I was fortunate to speak to Anne personally on several occasions and was awed by her modesty and her obvious love of work. I imagine Anne sitting at her computer typing from morning to night, her 2nd and 3rd volumes which are yet to come so she can share her wealth of information with midwives, students, mothers, anybody with an interest in pregnacy and childbirth. Well done Anne, I wait with uncontained enthusiasm for volumes 2 and 3!

Navigating poverty, unwanted pregnancy, single motherhood and inexperience, all Cooper's heroines triumph, to lesser and greater degrees, finding "real love" despite being surrounded by "no good men." "Filet of Soul," a novella-length story, features Sedalia, a poor girl who can't afford to go to her high school prom. Enchanted when her crush leaves the party to dance with her on the school lawn, she responds to his overtures. The result is Sedalia's first and last sexual encounter, which leaves her pregnant and twice as poor as before. To protect her daughter from making the same mistake, Sedalia raises Luella to think she's unlovable and ugly. Not surprisingly, her efforts backfire. Maisha watches with envy and condemnation as her girlhood friend, the beautiful Lorene, sets off for a glamorous though loveless and rootless life in the cities, while Maisha leads a quiet but fulfilling life as housewife and mother. Luella was told she was ugly by a disappointed mother, who wanted to spare her child the pain of taking a chance on love. When Luella takes that chance with a con man, he abandons her; but she stumbles onto real love and is too apprehensive to realize it at first. Vinnie sacrificed her youth for her children after her husband abandoned her. She nearly loses an opportunity for love, until she's awakened by a friend's sudden good fortune. More Than A Book....

I didn't expect anything less than what this book held - a wonderful collection of stories that are more than just "stories!"
This book like all the others [that she's written] are so full of life and wisdom. Mrs. Cooper is my favorite author beyond any doubt.
I read her books and I get stories about this journey called life - and in her stories - I get wisdom on how to handle this journey called life.
A masterful author - she delivers again with "The Future Has A Past." I encourage you to get her works and experience a true story-teller who leaves you with more "fight" to go through life knowing that each of us have the ability to come out of the fight victorious!
My only regret is, I wish she could write a book a month!

simply the best

It seems to me that when this lady writes something, it is so good that you feel that possibly, she can't top it, and then she does. J.California Cooper must be one of the most underrated African American writers there is because outside of her fans, you don't hear much about her. But in my opinion, she is one of the best writers out here. Anyone that could take a story and just make you enjoy it as though you enjoy a good meal or a good movie, that is Ms.Cooper. I enjoyed especially "A Filet of Soul". Luella may have had a self-esteem problem, but she sure wasn't a total fool. And in the end, she triumphed. The story about Vinnie and her self-centered children will come next. These stories are about ordinary folks whose life become a bit sweeter or in some instances, worse (like Cool in "The Lost and The Found" though I tend to feel he was set up for his own undoing).And in them, you find a lesson, and feel better for it. I only hope that more would recognize the talent that Ms.Cooper has and read her works. You won't come away disappointed.

Beautiful, Poignant Stories...MUST READS for the sisterhood!

I have to almost shyly say that I've never read a book by Ms. Cooper before, but when her newest work was sent to me, the title alone drew me in, and the book refused to let me go until I finished the last page.
The Future Has A Past is a collection of four stories that centered around a topic that women of all shades hold dear: LOVE. In these stories, Cooper introduces us to ordinary women who discover that love sometimes comes when you least expect it to.
In the collection, you'll find:
1. Maisha, the narrator of "A Shooting Star," chronicles the much-gossiped-about affairs of her friend Lorene and laments her inability to differentiate between sex and love,
2. In "The Eagle Flies," Vinnie, a single mother, devotes herself to her selfish children, letting opportunities for her own happiness slip by until it is almost too late,
3. In "A Filet of Soul," Louella, raised to believe she is ugly and undesirable, falls for a fast-talking con man and loses her small inheritance and her dignity; but his betrayal turns out to mark the beginning of a love affair -- and a life -- Louella had never imagined she would find, and
4. "The Lost and the Found," Lorene waits and waits for the philanderer she loves to marry her, almost letting the love of a good man pass her by
First and foremost, I have to say that Cooper's style is one that evokes emotions, that pulls you into the women's lives and pains, making you tap into your very own. There is no way I could pick just one story as my favorite, for as a woman, I found truth in each and every story, and so often found myself saying, "So and so NEEDS to read this story, and open their eyes."
Not only does Cooper spin a wonderful story, but she intricately weaves truth and wisdom into her words, making these stories almost a testament to various aspects of this thing called love.
The Future Has A Past is a book that should be a must-read to not only African American women, but to ALL women of the sisterhood, because I believe not one woman could read this collection and not find herself in at least one of the stories.
Let Cooper's down home narrators invite you into the excellent read that is The Future Has A Past...you'll definitely leave with new perspectives on love, and realizing that although we look to our futures, our pasts will help to construct those futures...make your NOW important and full of love, for yourself.
