Great book for anyone working in IT.

I've been in IT for almost 20 years now and just about all of the books are pie in the sky theory and cut and paste methodologies that don't work in an actual deployment.
(Why didn't I give this book 5 stars? I would've like some "anatomy of a failure" type lessons learned. But I would've given it 4 1/2 stars if possible.)

This book eschews the theory and talks about what needs to be done to put a service into a production environment and keep it up and running. If you're looking for some great guidelines as to what needs to be done to get a product up and running, this is the book.

As a software test professional, I make a plea to my testing colleagues to get this book. There needs to be more focus on the non-functional aspects of putting a service into an operational state and so little testing is done these days with that in mind.

For developers, it provides a good list of tips for making a system much more responsive with regards to status and reporting in a production environment. Great reminders for Devs to build a system that works in the environment to which it will be deployed.

This book is an excellent read for the infrastructure focused individual that would like to better understand the application layer and how to effectively address issues towards improving application and infrastructure stability.

I have been able to effectively utilize the concepts in this book to improve my overall troubleshooting capabilities.

Many books are predictable but this isn't really one of them. At the end of reading it, I'm left wondering what's going on and what's really behind the way Derek is behaving. I want to get my hands on the third part asap and find out what's going on!

I didn't care for where the story went. There is virtually no connection with the characters with each other or with me. The way they behave is so bizarre both professionally and personally and there are no explanations offered as to why that is. The way Tracey behaved professionally just really irritated me. I read this title in KU.

I read the first story and it was good enough that I decided to take a shot at the 2nd book. Boy was I disappointed. Too short, somewhat confusing, and way too expensive for this book. Don't buy this book...buy three. $.99 books instead. It's what this one should have been priced.

oh my gosh , thats the best movie that's come out that is non fiction in a long long while ,
i beleive and i hope the young couple that were the characters of HAzel & GUS should defienetly
receive awards , They were absolutely fantastic ,
they played the parts sooooooo great , am sure they studied it hard
i've cried so much and i love the movie , that the girl that took our ticket , informed us that the book
is even much better , so , my friend and i ordered each one just a few moments, ago ,
am sure it will be great reading ,
thanks again , for a great movie & a great cast with fabulous producers & directors that are involved

“The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green is amazing, loveable read that any one and every one should read. I gave this book a five star review because the characterization of Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace, the astonishing wording that Green uses for dialogue for his main characters and how this book stray from the “normal” teenage romance novel.
For example, we as a society have forgotten that not all teenagers are stuck up, illiterate, annoying adolescents. Everything has become acceptable to our overall society and when someone, especially when a teenager steps out of that mold and into an intellectual considerate mode it’s a rarity. Green uses this to his advantage with Gus and Hazel. Standing up to society’s mold of a teenager and their intelligence is something astounding. Since Gus and Hazel are survivors/surviving cancer they both know how to break the mold. Their dialogue and characterization shows just how they are.
Augustus “Gus” Waters who has/is suffering osteosarcoma is a very modern day Romeo. I say this not to be cliché but as a comparison. He (Gus) comes into Hazel Grace’s life out of nowhere, one would say spontaneously and sweeps her off her feet. Romancing her any way he could he won her “grenade” of a heart. Even as Hazel pushes him away he stays right by her side. He has a higher intelligence level then most guys I know and he makes one hell of a boyfriend. Hazel on the other hand is almost afraid of love. So far she sounds like the normal girl in a normal romance novel but she also suffers from cancer. She fears love, not because of the routine reasons (daddy issues, past loves leaving etc…) but because she is a grenade. Hazel quotes many times in the book, “When I go I want to minimize the casualties.” Now that’s a REAL reason to be afraid to love.
The third example is how Green characterized Hazel and Gus. He could’ve done anything else. Made them enemies or they meet sooner in their lives. But no he makes his move perfectly. Just when Hazel is feeling depressed and ready Gus comes in like a curve ball in the middle of the ninth inning, winning the game. No matter what the two face they stick together and it’s not in a cheesy way either it’s as if it’s completely natural and actually happened.
Green did an amazing job and I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a little infinity or a larger infinity.

A Great Primer on California's System

Having not grown up in California I was always a little in the dark as to how things operated in this State. However, when I picked this book up as part of a Political Science class I found myself much better off.

The book is short, which is really a good thing. Yeah, the author could have droned on about the minute detail of every aspect of California's government and political system, but she didn't. Rather, she laid out, in a concise fashion, an explanation of the governmental and political system in California that gives a person enough knowledge to understand what is going on around them and to make well informed decisions at the ballot box.

I would suggest this book for anyone who wants to be able to spend just a couple hours to understand the California system. This is also a great reference book to keep in the house.

James Stone's monograph: 'Independent Component Analysis'

James Stone's monograph is a refreshing new book amongst the many other `new books' on Independent Component Analysis (ICA). The author brings his teaching experience to present the theory and practice of ICA in a highly accessible form using a duplication of words and straight-forward mathematics.

Particular attention is given in the earlier chapters to the description of the linear signal mixing process giving the Reader a good basis for understanding the fundamental assumptions upon which ICA and its application to Blind Source Separation are based.

The book is aimed at the Reader with a technical but not necessarily formal mathematics background. Illustrative examples and functional algorithms in MatLab are frequent and references are made to the author's available electronic resources. As such it is suitable to both the newcomer to ICA, and to the more expert engineer or scientist.

The best introduction on the subject

I can't stress how reader friendly this book is. It is by far the best introduction on component analysis. It is written in such a way that those with a weaker math background can understand it while those with years of experience will not be bored, at certain times it even reads like a story.

It addition to being readable the book contains an impressive amount of content for its size. This content is presented in an organized manner, and in such a way that the user can immediately apply the techniques to their own problems.

If you are interested in independent component analysis or one of its relatives I highly recommend this valuable, reasonably price book.

Williams begins her analysis by comparing two programs of federal provision in the mid-nineteenth century—the Freedmen’s Bureau and the Civil War Veterans’ Pension system. Already at this early stage of its development, she shows, the emerging welfare state effectively denied blacks the protections it provided white Americans and simultaneously stigmatized blacks as welfare “dependents.” The linkages among race, moral worthiness, and social policy established then have persisted to the present. Her reexamination of key episodes in the later evolution of the American welfare state from the New Deal through the Clinton administration reveals how developments in social policy have advanced the privileges attached to “whiteness” by a variety of mechanisms: the ongoing reinterpretation of the American tradition of liberal individualism in racialized ways; the slow accretion of policy legacies; the construction of “whiteness” itself as a political category; and the normal procedures of coalition building and electoral politics. Through these connected processes, whiteness and the protection of white privilege became fundamental to the operation of American democracy, and their centrality has been continually reinforced by social policy. The result has been a politics in which race is used as a weapon by political parties and candidates to constrain and turn back the American welfare state. Looking to the future, Williams concludes by considering the socioeconomic conditions and political mechanisms that might help overcome the iron grip that white privilege holds on American social politics.

The Constraint of Race offers a challenging new approach to understanding the evolution of American social policy and the racial politics shaping it. Rather than focusing on the disadvantages suffered by blacks in the American welfare state, Linda Faye Williams looks at the other side of the coin: the advantages enjoyed by whites. Her hope is that rendering the benefits of "white skin privilege" more visible will help undermine their acceptance as "normal" and motivate renewed efforts toward achieving a more just and equitable society.

Williams begins her analysis by comparing two programs of federal provision in the mid-nineteenth century—the Freedmen’s Bureau and the Civil War Veterans’ Pension system. Already at this early stage of its development, she shows, the emerging welfare state effectively denied blacks the protections it provided white Americans and simultaneously stigmatized blacks as welfare "dependents." The linkages among race, moral worthiness, and social policy established then have persisted to the present.

Her reexamination of key episodes in the later evolution of the American welfare state from the New Deal through the Clinton administration reveals how developments in social policy have advanced the privileges attached to "whiteness" by a variety of mechanisms: the ongoing reinterpretation of the American tradition of liberal individualism in racialized ways; the slow accretion of policy legacies; the construction of "whiteness" itself as a political category; and the normal procedures of coalition building and electoral politics. Through these connected processes, whiteness and the protection of white privilege became fundamental to the operation of American democracy, and their centrality has been continually reinforced by social policy. The result has been a politics in which race is used as a weapon by political parties and candidates to constrain and turn back the American welfare state.

Looking to the future, Williams concludes by considering the socioeconomic conditions and political mechanisms that might help overcome the iron grip that white privilege holds on American social politics.

Public policy virtually sanctions racial discrimination

Using the later 20th/early 21st century as her canvas, Linda Faye Williams paints a disturbing and all too true portrait of American social policy's inherently racialized construct. Our formal declarations of `equal opportunity' are undercut by the cultural reality of racist social policy. Like Dorothy Roberts, she argues that gender and racial hierarchies intersect to specifically disadvantage black women.

Unlike Robert's earlier work, this book goes all the way back to the emancipation era and covers many more issue areas beyond reproduction. When the federal government has intervened for racial equality, it has only done so in periods which are relatively fleetingly in comparison to the magnitude of the problem.

Williams has her most provocative research in a chapter on the black community's consistent support for President Bill Clinton (1993-2001). Blacks had consistently supported the Clinton administration at levels which easily overshadowed the total support simultaneously received from white voters. Although she does not provide a detailed analysis of intra- African American socioeconomic issues, Williams does ask us to consider how goals and stereotypes subtly but pervasively co-exist in public policy programs.

Those ultimately racialized voter patterns were established and then further solidified even as Clinton signed `welfare reform' which specifically built off the specter of the `welfare queen'; a presumably African American woman who lived off of the government instead of having a `job' and then raising her kids `right'. Ironically, before the federal welfare program became racially integrated in the 1960's, the white welfare recipients were intentionally supposed to stay at home with their children and not work outside of the home specifically so that their children would grow up `right'.

Williams correctly recognizes that any `universal' public policy does fact take on racial connotations because of our society's fundamentally racialized nature. People who prefer the status quo (and the ensuing racial constructs) are not going to be happy with a program which then attempts to equalize the playing field for all Americans. Talking about democracy is one thing, but sharing it with somebody who looks different from the self still makes many Americans and our public officials uncomfortable in spite of their `tolerant' public demeanor.

This book is an essential read for people studying race/ethnicity, but I also think it needs to be at the top of public administration reading lists. Conceeding that public policy is not value neutral is the first step in making a society which truly is equal.

Excellent Read

The late Dr. Williams was an amazing writer. The text, "The Constraints of Race" provides all the missing components to the question, "What exactly happened after slavery?" I wish I would have had the pleasure of meeting her. Thank God her legacy still lives on.

Outstanding Reference Book on Class, Race & Gender

I would highly recommend this book as a great reference when studying race and gender. Dr. Williams' book is an outstanding publication that should be required reading for political science students.
