Fear and Trembling (Penguin Classics), by Soren Kierkegaard

The infamous and controversial work that made a lasting impression on both modern Protestant theology and existentialist philosophers such as Sartre and Camus

Writing under the pseudonym of "Johannes de silentio," Kierkegaard expounds his personal view of religion through a discussion of the scene in Genesis in which Abraham prepares to sacrifice his son Isaac at God's command. Believing Abraham's unreserved obedience to be the essential leap of faith needed to make a full commitment to his religion, Kierkegaard himself made great sacrifices in order to dedicate his life entirely to his philosophy and to God. The conviction shown in this religious polemic—that a man can have an exceptional mission in life—informed all Kierkegaard's later writings. His "teleological suspension of the ethical" challenged the contemporary views of Hegel's universal moral system, and was also hugely influential for both protestant theology and the existentialist movement.

Alastair Hannay's introduction evaluates Kierkegaard's philosophy and the ways in which it conflicted with more accepted contemporary views. This edition also includes detailed notes to complement this groundbreaking analysis of religion, and a new chronology.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. true faith is not completely reliant on logic
By Xue Tian
The value of this work is that it correctly argues that faith is ultimately a choice that cannot be completely supported by logic or rational proof. It was Kierkegaard's experience of losing the chance to be with the person he loved that forced him to confront the absurd nature of faith. Although believers in many religions will argue that their faith is logical and rational, Kierkegaard fully grasped that if conviction is based fully on logic, it does not need faith to support it.

Perhaps the best metaphor can be found in the New Testament passage where Christ invites Peter to walk on water -- Peter takes a step with faith and does not sink, but then looks down, and begins to evaluate the situation using his rational mind, and begins to sink. True faith walks on water. Only true faith could be sufficient to base a life on the conviction that a dead guy in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago came back from the dead and has his own kingdom where his followers will live forever in eternal bliss. On the other hand, this conviction has become so entrenched in the popular culture of the last 2,000 years that it has just become an unremarkable backdrop to the modern world and is considered a socially acceptable belief.

The challenge for a modern christian is to find true faith when they mistakenly believe that the story of Jesus Christ is completely supported by logic and rational thinking. The mere act of mentally assenting to what has been accepted in popular culture, a broad and shallow idea that God and Jesus exist, is not faith at all; just an unexamined conclusion of a lazy mind that has not yet questioned its own surroundings. True faith is a radical departure from the status quo, a renewal of personal conviction despite all contradictions and a recognition of UNCERTAINTY. Without a recognition of uncertainty, faith has no meaning. The strength of true faith is that it acknowledges that uncertainty exists, and yet still forges on in spite of the uncertainty, willingly accepting and embracing the consequences of conviction in the face of uncertainty. There is not fear that the conviction may be misled and flinching because of the uncertainty, there is a recognition that this lack of absolute rational proof and certainty is what gives faith its supreme virtue. This is what makes faith courageous and is something that only mortal humans can do, since angels are blessed with absolute knowledge whereas humans are blessed with uncertainty, which is the only way that true freedom can exist. Without this freedom, the choice of "faith" would not be possible, would not be courageous, and would not make mortals eligible for the reward of heaven.

The believer who claims that all faith is logical has not yet come to the moment of testing, like Abraham, like Kierkegaard, where the object of the soul's deepest longing and only happiness is seen, but yet out of reach. For Kierkegaard it was the girl he loved, that he could never be with, but yet he retained hope and transformed that hope into a lifetime of faith. The personal pain of such an experience leads a person to exclaim "it doesn't make sense!" Only when one reaches the point where it just doesn't make sense can the ultimate nature of real and profound faith be experienced and put into action. Anything else is a shallow beginning, and not yet a sufficient faith to walk on water, just as Peter found when he was invited to take that step...

This book is full of such profound insight because Kierkegaard understood this and knew that faith was not a shallow, cheap or easy achievement:

"In those old days it was different. For then faith was a task for a whole lifetime, not a skill thought to be acquired in either days or weeks. When the old campaigner approached the end, had fought the good fight, and kept his faith, his heart was still young enough not to have forgotten the fear and trembling that disciplined his youth...." Makes a philosopher weak in the knees
By D. Roberts
FEAR AND TREMBLING stands as one of Soren Kierkegaard's most widely read works. It's brevity is appealing to those with only a marginal interest in philosophy and theology. It's subject matter is what attracts those persons who want to find a nexus between ethics and theology.
In the work, Kierkegaard engages the famous passage in the Old Testament of the bible where Abraham is ordered by God (Yahweh) to sacrifice his son, Isaac. It stands today as the most salient episode in the bible where Plato's EUTHYPHRO dillema is confronted.
Now, what is the EUTHYPHRO dillema, you may ask? The dillema is set out by Socrates in Plato's dialouge of the same name. Basically, it comes down to this: are good and evil intrinsic to the universe itself? Or are the qualities of good and evil decided upon by God (or gods)? If the former is true, then God (or the head of a pantheon of gods) cannot be truly omnipotent, for there is at least one power that even he / she / it must follow. If, on the other hand, good and evil are decided by God(s), then might makes right.
Enter Kierkegaard, who spends the pages of this work acting more-or-less as a defense attorney for Abraham for his even contemplating the murder of his son. For Kierkegaard, the divine-command-theorist, the latter horn of the conundrum (i.e.: might makes right) is the only plausible alternative open for the religious believer. The first horn denies God's sovereign omnipotence over the universe and all of its affairs, which is utterly unacceptable.
So, the Dane offers to us the defense of what he calls the "teleological suspension of ethics." That is to say, while Abraham was acting out of direction from God, he was not subject to the ethical laws of the "everyday" universe that the rest of us live in every day.
That, in brief, is the topic that this book considers. For the complete explanation and polemics of his views, this book is highly recommended. That the subject matter of FEAR AND TREMBLING greatly disturbed Kierkegaard becomes readily obvious in the first pages. If the arguments presented are examined carefully, it is a topic whose implications may very well shock the modern-day theologian as well.

Johannes de silentio is anything but
By The trebuchet
The ironic pen-name Kierkegaard uses should be more than enough warning that things aren't necessarily what they seem, so if anyone tells you what this book is about, or what Kierkegaard intended, I suggest you take it with a grain of salt, read this book, and decide for yourself.
Students of Kierkegaard will tell you the meaning of this book in terms of his personal life; philosophers will show you its philosophical meaning; the religious will describe it as a treatise on faith. It is probably all of these, and may be even more. The work centers on the exemplary life of Abraham, in particular the story in which he is asked by God to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac - the son given to him as fulfillment of a promise by God himself. This story is fully worthy of the "fear and trembling" the title expects, but it also serves as an archetypal example of faith itself, in uncompromising terms.
It is also a counter-argument against the (in Kierkegaard's view) stifling moral rationalism of Hegel - an argument "on the strength of the absurd" which is nonetheless compelling, even if one were to ultimately reject it. Considering this, it is perhaps fitting that his work - certainly grave and severe - ultimately provides an affirmation of individual self-determination and a wholehearted engagement with the real world and its affairs... a faith which Kierkegaard professed himself incapable of.
Worth the time of reading once or several times. Poetic, but not lighthearted entertainment - then again, who would read a book titled "Fear and Trembling" on a lark?

Kant's 'Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason': A Reader's Guide (Reader's Guides), by Eddis N. Miller

Immanuel Kant's Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason is a seminal text in modern philosophy, ethics, and the philosophy of religion. It is a complex and challenging work, which students and scholars often find difficult to penetrate. This Reader's Guide provides a 'way in' to the text including: philosophical and historical context; an overview of key themes; section-by-section analysis of the text; a chapter on its reception and influence as a classic text of the Enlightenment; and a guide for further reading. It highlights the most important themes and ideas, clarifies certain opaque features, and examines the junctures in the text that are critical for any philosophical assessment of Kant's argument. Eddis N. Miller offers a sound understanding of Kant's Religion and the tools for students to philosophically assess Kant's overall argument.

Review
Miller's book navigates with impressive clarity the complex terrain of Kant's Religion, providing useful historical context along the way. The commentary itself is informed and reliable, helpfully enhanced by indications of the continuing relevance of many of Kant's central concerns. The result is a very clearly written book that will be unusually useful in many different teaching settings. Gordon E. Michalson, New College of Florida, USA.

Too good a book to be true
By a.i.p
Too good a book to be true, it gives you everything you cannot find anywhere else, scale of twelve energies, as done by Mr. Bennett only, and also the world's, 123. This ones, if someone looks for at least some information of laws, how it happens, when three forces separate, and then connect together, it's in here. And many more things, even verse. So, I don't know what's with reviewer called A Customer. The text is taken literary from cassettes, why to give three star. And what about willing sacrifice, it's conscious work, and voluntary suffering. So, a willing sacrifice, and all this for reciprocal maintainance, oh song renown, all this with underlining, and very, very deep meaning. Or green underworld, where you submerged me, it's not a Deeper Man of course, you had to be disappointed.

Not written by J.G. Bennett
By Amazon Customer
To name John Bennett as the author of this book is inaccurate. He did not "write" a single word of it - even the title is ambiguous. At the time of his death Bennett verbally indicated a desire to write a book to be titled "Dig Deeper Man" - possibly a reference to Gurdjieff's oft-quoted maxim: "Bury the dog deeper!" - and since his hearers could only guess at possible punctuation of this sentence, a wide range of possible meanings are excluded by the present title. A.G.E. Blake compiled the book after Bennett's death, as he did with a number of other titles, from selections from transcripts of lectures to Bennett's students at the Academy for Continuous Education, and from his own notes. My personal issue with this book is that it is limited to Blake's own preoccupations. For example, there is scarcely any mention of the notion that Bennett repeatedly described as "of the first importance" - i.e. the principle of Reciprocal Maintenance. This is a notion that Bennett first heard from Gurdjieff in August 1923, and in the last 20 years of his life, he continually drew attention to it. The last eight years of Bennett's life - from 1966 to 1974 seem to have been characterized by a process of learning in his own practical life, ways to transmit the insights of "The Dramatic Universe" to seekers two generations younger than himself. He constantly reiterated the necessity for creating a new world based on willing sacrifice, which he says is Reciprocal Maintenance in action. "Deeper Man" is an enjoyable read and contains a good, concise simplification of Bennett's cosmology, but ultimately it falls short. Personally I think this book should carry Blake's name as author.

New England Bound: Slavery and Colonization in Early America, by Wendy Warren

A New York Times Editor’s Choice

"This book is an original achievement, the kind of history that chastens our historical memory as it makes us wiser." ―David W. Blight

In a work that fundamentally recasts the history of colonial America, Wendy Warren shows how the institution of slavery was inexorably linked with the first century of English colonization of New England. While most histories of slavery in early America confine themselves to the Southern colonies and the Caribbean, New England Bound forcefully widens the historical aperture to include the entirety of English North America, integrating the famed "city on a hill" of seventeenth-century Puritan New England into the cruel Atlantic system from its very beginnings.

Using original research culled from dozens of archives, Warren conclusively links the growth of the northern colonies to the Atlantic slave trade, showing how seventeenth-century New England’s fledgling economy derived its vitality from the profusion of ships that coursed through its ports, passing through on their way to and from the West Indian sugar colonies. What’s more, leading New England families like the Winthrops and Pynchons invested heavily in the West Indies, owning both land and human property, the profits of which eventually wended their way back north. That money, New England Bound shows, was the tragic fuel for the colonial wars of removal and replacement of New England Indians that characterized the initial colonization of the region. Warren painstakingly documents the little-known history of how Native Americans were systematically sold as slaves to plantations in the Caribbean, even in the first decades of English colonization.

And even while New England Bound explains the way in which the Atlantic slave trade drove the colonization of New England, it also brings to light, in many cases for the first time ever, the lives of the thousands of reluctant Indian and African slaves who found themselves forced into the project of building that city on a hill. We encounter enslaved Africans working side jobs as con artists, enslaved Indians who protested their banishment to sugar islands, enslaved Africans who set fire to their owners’ homes and goods, and enslaved Africans who saved their owners’ lives. In Warren’s meticulous, compelling, and hard-won recovery of such forgotten lives, the true variety of chattel slavery in the Americas comes to light, and New England Bound becomes the new standard for understanding colonial America.

Review
“Whereas most studies of slavery in the United States concern the antebellum South, this one stakes out less visited territory―the laws and decisions made by the colonists in New England two centuries earlier.” (The New Yorker)

“[Warren] builds on and generously acknowledges more than two generations of research into the social history of New England and the economic history of the Atlantic world. But not  only has she mastered that scholarship, she has also brought it together in an original way, and deepened the story with fresh research…New England Bound conveys the disorientation, the deprivation, the vulnerability, the occasional hunger and the profound isolation that defined the life of most African exiles in Puritan New England, where there was no plantation community.” (Christopher L. Brown - New York Times Book Review)

“'Slavery was in England’s American colonies, even its New England colonies, from the very beginning,' explains Princeton historian Wendy Warren in her deeply thoughtful, elegantly written New England Bound....The greatest revelations of New England Bound lie in Warren’s meticulous reconstruction of slavery in colonial New England....Warren pores over the patchy archival record with a probing eye and an ear keen to silences.” (Maya Jasanoff - New York Review of Books)

“[Warren] widens the lens to show the early New England economy was enmeshed in the seafaring trade that developed between four Atlantic continents for the transport, clothing, and feeding of African captives. The region’s early growth and prosperity, Warren shows, sprang from that tainted commerce. . . . Southerners resentful of Northerners’ condescension about the slaveholding past may find some comfort in these pages. In them should be some Northern discomfort too.” (Kenneth J. Cooper - Boston Globe)

“Historians have written penetratingly on North American colonial racism and slavery―Edmund Morgan, Alden Vaughan, Ira Berlin, for starters―but New England Bound is a smart contribution to the New England story, a panoptical exploration of how slavery took root like a weed in the crack of a sidewalk. . . . What we have in this account is sharp explication of the ‘deadly symbiosis’ of colonization and slavery, written with a governed verve that perks like a coffee pot. It makes the New England story that much fuller, challenging, and more accountable.” (Peter Lewis - Christian Science Monitor)

“A bracing and fearless inquiry into the intricate web of slavery and empire into which all New Englanders were bound. Ardently argued, and urgently necessary.” (Jill Lepore, author of New York Burning)

“A beautifully written, humane and finely researched work that makes clear how closely intermingled varieties of slavery and New England colonization were from the very start. With great skill, Warren does full justice to the ideas of the individuals involved, as well as to the political and economic imperatives that drove some, and that trapped and gravely damaged others.” (Linda Colley, author of Captives: Britain, Empire, and the World, 1600-1850)

“Wendy Warren's deeply researched and powerfully written New England Bound opens up a new vista for the study of slavery and race in the United States. It will transform our thinking about seventeenth-century New England.” (Annette Gordon-Reed, author of The Hemingses of Monticello, winner of the Pulitzer Prize)

“New England Bound is a book of revelations. Not only does Wendy Warren cast startling new light on early America, not only does she uncover how racial slavery was woven into the fabric of New England from the very beginning, but she also shows how forgotten folk―people long thought lost to history―can be brought to light, and to life, if we look, and listen, for their stories. A remarkable achievement.” (James Merrell, author of Into the American Woods, winner of the Bancroft Prize)

“With intrepid research and stunning narrative skill, Wendy Warren demonstrates how much seventeenth-century New England societies were dependent on the West Indian slave trade, and especially on the labor, bodies, and lives of black slaves. Warren has turned the prophetic lessons of Ecclesiastes back upon the Puritan fathers with scholarly judgment, humanizing both them and the people they enslaved. This book is an original achievement, the kind of history that chastens our historical memory as it makes us wiser.” (David W. Blight, Yale University, author of Race and Reunion)

“In New England Bound, Wendy Warren builds a powerful case for the centrality of slavery to the economy of the Puritan colonies in the North.” (Joyce Appleby, author of The Relentless Revolution)

“A major contribution to the history of enslavement, of African Americans, of early New England society, and―most important―of the sinews and tissues at the center of the whole complex process we call 'colonization.' The research that supports it is ingenious, the argument compelling, the prose lucid and graceful.” (John Demos, author of The Heathen School)

It is far from the happy myths of Thanksgiving we are taught as school children
By Amazon Customer
New Englanders who think it was the South that abused Africans in slavery should Read This Book. A more true history of our earliest impact on this continent, already occupied by the original 'Americans' when the first Pilgrims came to its shores, and what these earliest settlers did, shamefully, to both Indigenous tribes and african slaves. This is the history of our country. It is far from the happy myths of Thanksgiving we are taught as school children. We will be a better people if we acknowledge this history. It is a book to be widely read and shared.

Professor Warren offers keen insights into a place and period often glossed over in scholarship on chattel slavery in North America. I would recommend it as a companion piece to Edmund Morgan's classic "American Slavery, American Freedom."

This book is tedious and repetitive to read but provides a history of which most Americans are completely ignorant. It is important to recognize and own our past. This book helps one to do that.

Aristophanic Comedy, by K. J. Dover

Professor Dover's newest book is designed for those who are interested in the history of comedy as an art form but who are not necessarily familiar with the Greek language.

The eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes are treated as representative of a genre. Old Attic Comedy, which was artistically and intellectually homogeneous and gave expression to the spirit of Athenian society in the late fifth and early fourth centuries B.C. Aristophanes is regarded primarily not as a reformer or propagandist but as a dramatist who sought, in competition with his rivals, to win the esteem both of the general public and of the cultivated and critical minority. He succeeded in this effort by making people laugh, and the book pays more attention than has generally been paid to the technical means, whether of language or of situation, on which Aristophanes' humor depends. Particular emphasis is laid on his indifference-positively assisted by the physical limitations of the Greek theatre and the conditions of the Athenian dramatic festivals-to the maintenance of continuous “dramatic illusion” or to the provision of a dramatic event with the antecedents and consequences which might logically be expected. More importance is attached to Aristophanes' adoption of popular attitudes and beliefs, to his creation of uninhibited characters with which the spectators could identify themselves, and to his acceptance of the comic poet's traditional role as a mordant but jocular critic of morals, than to any identifiable and consistent elements in his political standpoint.

Aristophanic primer
By J. C. Woods
If you don't know your parabasis from your agon, your are probably better off starting your study of Aristophanes with this book than one that assumes more like Strauss' Socrates and Aristophanes. In this book, Dover gives you an overview of the structure of the Attic comedy, defines terms, explains how they were staged and selected for performance (all the mundane issues Strauss does not deign to cover). Strauss is, of course, still the undisputed champ in explaining the meaning of the plays, but you have a better chance of understanding his explanations if you've read Dover first. Crede experto. I did it the other way round.

Aristophanean Basics
By J. C. Woods
Admittedly, Strauss' Socrates and Aristophanes is the best book of higher criticism on Aristophanes' remaining plays. Unfortunately, that book has a painful deficiency: Strauss overrates his readers, assuming they know their agon from their parabasis (a dubious assumption). Dover, while not where near so insightful, makes up for Strauss' deficiency by explaining the parts of the comedy, how they were staged and all the other practical details Strauss disdains. If you are a classical scholar, well maybe Dover's book is a waste of time. If not, then it is a valuable adjunct to Strauss( Better read before Strauss. I did it the other way. Not pretty.).

Ideal Introduction to Aristophanes
By J. E. S. Leake
This is certainly the best serious introduction to Aristophanes you can find. He covers almost everything: his introductory chapters cover the textual evidence, stage directions, the comic theatre, play structure, parody. Having done that, he works through the plays using each play to examine a different aspect of Aristophanes and the comic theatre. There are a few pages on Aristophanes' predecessors and rivals, then a larger section on the nachleben - posterity - of Arisophanes' works, finishing with an examination of various translations (the latest translations discussed are those of the 1960s - naturally for a 1972 book) and adaptations. It's a book I can't recommend enough, academic without being obscure and clear without being patronizing.

Other general books on Aristophanes that you may find interesting have a more limited range. Russo's _Aristofane: Autore di teatro_ (translated as Aristophanes: An Author for the Stage) is excellent for just that - Aristophanes as a playwright of real plays. MacDowell's Aristophanes and Athens: An Introduction to the Plays is a more recent book, somewhat like Dover but more focussed on the plays rather than themes, and rather less useful in my opinion. For a major literary study, Silk's Aristophanes and the Definition of Comedy might be tried.

For the Graecist, I recommend Willi's The Languages of Aristophanes: Aspects of Linguistic Variation in Classical Attic Greek (Oxford Classical Monographs). But that's for the more experienced.

Finally, as a very short - but intense - introduction, Ussher's Aristophanes (New Surveys in the Classics No 13) is excellent, and should be findable for five or so dollars second hand.

Understanding Shakespeare
By Amazon Customer
For a long time I would not let my students use No Fear because I wanted them to be able to read the play in Shakespeare's words, but when I tired to discuss the plays with them, I always felt like I was the only who read the play. (I use it for Hamlet as well.) After I let them use it the first time, I was so excited to hear my students' comments on the play because they actually understood what they were reading. When they write about the play and when we discuss it, we use Shakespeare's words. We also compare the modern words and Shakespeare's words. I really like the No Fears and recommend them to people who really want to understand Shakespeare. I have taught high school and am now teaching at a university, so I know the No Fears are great on both levels.

Naxos complete recording the best so far
By F. Behrens
Please notice that G.H.'s in-house review above does not refer to the recording pictured above, nor do any of the reviews so far. What follows refers only to the Naxos set.
There are now three complete recordings of available. We have the older and elegantly read version on Harper Audio with Dorothy Tutin as the best Viola of the lot. Acted with a bit more verve though with less poetry is the Arkangel Shakespeare recording with a Scottish Malvolio and a cast of younger sounding actors who are making names for themselves in Great Britain. However I am very impressed with the "Twelfth Night" that is one of the latest additions to the Naxos Classic Drama series.
By far, this is the best-produced "Twelfth Night." One actually feels he is hearing an actual stage performance with all of the action but with the loss of none of the poetry. Perhaps the Viola does sound a little maturer than imagination would have her and the Sir Toby Belch a little less belchy sounding than others. None of the Festes sing as marvelously as did Peter Pears on the long deleted Marlowe Society recording (also with Tutin); however, on this Naxos set David Timson stays nicely in tune--and directs the production to boot. And he keeps things moving neatly along, which is saying a lot for Shakespeare recordings.
The CD version has the advantage of excellent tracking cues for not only each scene but for key points within the scene. The Harper CDs give a new track only for each new scene and the tapes (of course) are quite useless in that regard. The Arkangel series at present exists only on tapes but they are planning to reissue the entire series on CDs. So this Naxos release is the one of choice so far.
