Stephen C. Harper, Ph.D., is an entrepreneur, consultant, speaker, award-winning educator, and best-selling author. (2012), The Ever-Evolving Enterprise (2011), Extraordinary Entrepreneurship (2004), The McGraw-Hill Guide To Starting Your Own Business (2003) - a national bestseller - that includes a Chinese edition, The Forward-Focused Organization (2001), The McGraw-Hill Guide To Managing Growth In Your Emerging Business, (1995), and Management: Who Ever Said It Would Be Easy? (Editor and co-author, 1983). His latest book, Here's to the Crazy Entrepreneurs: Is Entrepreneurism a Mental Disorder? (2013) takes the reader inside the mindset of real entrepreneurs who change the way we live and work. It poses the question, "Are entrepreneurs the crazy ones or are the people who do not have the guts to leave their comfort zones to start ventures actually the crazy ones?" Steve has been on the faculty at Arizona State University where he earned his doctorate, Duke University – as a Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurship in its Executive MBA program, and The University of North Carolina Wilmington – where he is the Progress Energy/Betty Cameron Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship. Steve is the recipient of numerous awards including: The University of North Carolina Board of Governors' Award for Teaching Excellence. He has also received the Chairman’s Service Award by the Council for Entrepreneurial Development and been recognized for outstanding service by the U.S. Small Business Administration for establishing and being the Director of UNCW’s Small Business Institute for twenty years. Steve was President of Harper and Associates Inc. a business consulting firm, from 1976 through 2009. He has also been the co-founder and President of numerous economic development organizations. He has also served on the board of directors for numerous organizations. Steve has conducted hundreds of seminars on strategic thinking, breakthrough leadership, corporate entrepreneurship, and the management of change for corporations and not-for-profit enterprises. In this latest of his books about various aspects of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Harper offers up some entertaining and important ideas about the non-typical mental DNA of entrepreneurs. He blends his attention grabbing, tongue-in-cheek humor about "crazy entrepreneurs" with some sharp insights into the profile of those who defy conventional dogma while pursuing their vision of a disruptive product or new services offering. As for the case Dr. Harper makes about "entrepreneurism as a mental disorder"...I resemble those remarks! As do so many of the people I've admired and learned from throughout my long business career. If you want to be an entrepreneur, or want to understand why you or a loved one are chronically afflicted with the pursuit of "just one more startup", then this book is for you!

RAYMOND A. NOE is the Robert and Anne Hoyt Designated Professor of Management at The Ohio State University. He was previously a professor in the Department of Management at Michigan State University and the Industrial Relations Center of the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He received his BS in psychology from The Ohio State University and his MA and PhD in psychology from Michigan State University. Professor Noe conducts research and teaches undergraduate as well as MBA and PhD students in human resource management, managerial skills, quantitative methods, human resource information systems, training, employee development, and organizational behavior. He has published articles in the Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Personnel Psychology. Professor Noe is currently on the editorial boards of several journals including Personnel Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. Professor Noe has received awards for his teaching and research excellence, including the Ernest J. McCormick Award for Distinguished Early Career Contribution from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. The dialog between various characters is on the button, I live in the Western Cape and that is how the locals speak.

Nou net klaar gelees en was goed beindruk. Om karakters so lewend en interesant te hou is voorwaar nie maklik nie. Cupido word nou mooi groot. Hou baie van Mbali en wil meer van haar lees. Michael E. Mann is Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science and Director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University. A Clear Behind the Scenes Look at Climate Change Denial and How to Respond to Climate Change Reality

The best way to get people to work against their own best interest is to lie to them. And, that’s just what vested interests in the fossil fuel (oil, gas and coal) industry have been doing quite effectively for decades. And, for decades, we’ve been buying and burning their fossil fuels, which emit carbon dioxide that pollutes our air, acidifies our oceans, and causes global warming. That, in turn, is changing our climate in ways that are already disastrous but will be cataclysmic if the CO2 emissions aren’t checked.

In The Madhouse Effect, Michael Mann clearly explains how vested interests have distorted our understanding of the ongoing climate disaster. He also identifies both who’s doing the distorting and who’s paying them to do it.

He’s one of a half dozen world-renowned climate scientists who have been singled out for vicious personal attacks by climate change deniers. That might lead you to expect this book would be wild-eyed retaliation. But, the 24 pages of footnotes show the care Michael Mann took to document what he says. He wrote The Madhouse Effect with a scientist’s concern for accuracy.

Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Tom Tolles provides concise, incisive visual messages throughout the book that both support Mann’s message and give it additional impact.

Lest you think the book a complete downer, my personal take-away is Mann’s twofold advice in his last chapter, “A Path Forward.” First, he calls us to “Support renewable energy and a price on carbon, and vote for representatives who will do the same.” Then, because the problem has grown beyond anything we can do alone, he urges us to “Join an organization with a good track record on climate.” By doing both these things, we can prevent the worst effects of climate change and keep this a livable world.

The Political War on Climate Science

There’s no reasonable doubt, climate change is happening, it is potentially devastating, and the reason for it is us. Luckily mitigation is in general not very harmful to the economy but we need to act sooner than later. Unfortunately, we are living in a political madhouse.

Science is a self-correcting process used for acquiring knowledge, and yet Climate Science has become very controversial in the political arena. This book explains why. The light hearted cartoons provided by Tom Toles help make this important book entertaining.

The book starts out by briefly explaining how science works and the basics of Climate Science. A lot of people with strong opinions on Climate Science do not know anything about it, so this is a very important section of the book. The book only covers the necessary basics of the science and the explanations are easy to understand, so not being science minded is not a reason not to read this book. In addition to explaining why it is happening it describes what the various effects of climate change are, such as sea level rise, ocean acidification and droughts.

Next the book discusses the background of what could be described as a war on climate science. This includes, misrepresentation of the science, deception, manufactured fake scandals such as “climate-gate”, the slandering of climate scientists, campaigns seeking to discredit climate science and climate scientist in the eyes of the public, intimidation of climate scientists, and the fossil fuel money behind it. This part may make the book seem “political”, but remember the politics was thrust onto the climate scientists. Towards the end of the book the author discusses potential solutions and mitigation schemes, including the risks related to suggested Geo-Engineering schemes.

This book should be very informative for readers who have picked up most of what they know about climate science from the main stream media (or worse from political blogs and shows). The author explains the difference between good-faith skepticism and denialism. He explains why any assertion of climate change being a “hoax” is entirely untenable. He discusses the science, the evidence, the 200-year long history of climate science, the hockey-stick controversy, and some common fallacious arguments against climate change. He includes a very substantial list of footnotes for reference and further reading.

As a short introduction to climate change and the unfortunate political controversy around it, this is an excellent book. It is well written, well organized, entertaining, short, and easy to read. The author, Michael Mann, has personal experience of harassment by politicians and other public figures, which gives him some interesting insights. At the same time, he is not indulging in petty revenge attacks but instead taking the high road, with humor. It is a great book for anyone with the slightest interest in the topic.

The chapter titles give a good idea of what the book covers: Science - How It Works; Climate Change: The Basics; Why Should I Give a Damn?; The Stages of Denial; The War on Climate Science; Hypocrisy - Thy Name is Climate Change Denial; Geoengineering, or What Could Possibly Go Wrong?; A Path Forward. The book finishes with over 20 pages of footnotes and links to on-line resources.

The author, Michael Mann, is a well-known and highly respected climate scientist who has been front and center in the battle between science and the science-deniers in confronting man-made climate change. His experience in communicating the science really shines in this book, which is laced with informative analogies.

For non-scientists, the first chapter on how science works should put some conspiracy theories to rest.

Also for non-scientists, as well as for scientists in fields other than climate science, the summary of climate change is very clear and comprehensive.

The middle section of the book describes the climate denial movement, and the various strange players in it who are driven by combinations of financial interest, ideology, and egotism. Mann doesn't shrink from naming names. For me, one of the sharpest distinctions between real scientists such as Mann and the denier "scientists" is that the former write so clearly and logically, whereas the latter are illogical, confused, and self-contradictory.

Future generations will look back on early 21st Century climate denialism with amazement and anger. Mann's book will be an invaluable primary source to explain to bewildered historians why we took so long to take action.

Well-written account of the origins and development of a modern esoteric school.

The Beshara ("Good News") School owes its origins to the influence of Bulent Rauf, a Turkish aristocrat who - after experiencing some major personal crises - emigrated to England in the 1960's in response to an inner impulse to bring a spiritual Way to a generation that was actively seeking approaches to the Divine apart from traditional Christian or Jewish formulations. While in England, Rauf came into contact with Reshad Feild, a former pop-singer turned spiritual-seeker, for whom he became an informal, on-again, off-again spiritual guide. (This is a sensitive point, for Rauf expressly denied the role of guru, sheikh, or even "teacher.") The story of the relationship between Rauf and Feild is told in Feild's slightly fictionalized books "The Last Barrier" and "The Invisible way," both highly recommended. In these books, a clumsy, slow-to-learn Feild is introduced to the ways of Turkish Sufism, an esoteric expression of Islam, under the direction of Rauf (as represented by the character named "Hamid").

Having read Feild's books, in which Rauf comes across as "a man who speaks with authority", I was surprised to learn that the real-life Rauf - although exposed to Sufism as a youth - had apparently never formally belonged to a Sufi order or studied under a Sufi master. Rauf's knowledge rather came through a series of visionary or "imaginal" experiences emanating from a higher plane, a kind of "direct transmission" of spiritual truth, known in Sufi circles as the Uwaysi "school".

Inspired by Rauf, Feild eventually acquired property on the English-Scottish border for a "center" as a base of operations, and this center/school was initially affiliated with Hazrat Inayat Khan's Sufi Order International. Over time, Feild's and Rauf's visions for the school began to diverge. Feild eventually departed, and Rauf assumed control over the school's curriculum and overall direction. Under Rauf, the school minimized its specifically Sufi and Islamic ties and began to emphasize the ideas of the Islamic thinker, Ibn Arabi, whose monistic philosophy was often summarized under the phrase the Unity of Being or the Oneness of Being, in which all of reality is viewed as being a manifestation of the Divine. As is typical with mystical experience, the Unity of Being cannot easily be expressed in human language, and exposition of the initially simple idea of Oneness involves an enormous degree of intellectual effort (see below). The school initiated a series of intense educational programs combining academic study, monastic-like restrictions on personal behavior, meditation, and practical-oriented work or "service," intended to apply the academic teachings to everyday situations. A high emphasis was placed on "quality" or "taste," and this was applied to everything from cooking to house cleaning to gardening.

Taji-Farouki devotes the bulk of her book to an exposition of the basic ideas of Ibn Arabi, the details of the Beshara curriculum, and the relationship of Beshara to the New Age movement, to Islam, to Sufism, and to society at large. Beshara students/members/associates emphasize the universality of their approach and - despite its use of Arabic terms and Islamic concepts - its independence from any traditional religious institution or form. They deny that Beshara is a religion or even a formal "order" such as is found in Sufism, and believe that their lack of hierarchy and their "inclusiveness" makes them an ideal model for the future of spirituality. THAT is where I begin to disagree.

Ibn Arabi can be very difficult reading, and is definitely NOT for the masses. The book contains several appendices, one of which consists of a transcript of a Beshara study session, including excerpts from their teaching materials. One sentence in the excerpt consists of a sentence containing 161 words (by my count), which just might be the longest sentence I have ever seen. Moreover, the material is liberally sprinkled with transliterated Arabic words. An example: "When or if for Its own Being the Divine meshiya appertained to the Will (irada) of nourishment, in other words, by virtue of the degree of Divinity when the Being of the haqq which is actualized in the possibilities of the a'yan manifested the determinations of the Divine Names which are at the strength of that degree by manifesting in the places of manifestation of the a'yan of possibilities and through Its meshiya appertained to the Will (irada) of being nourished, then the totality of immanence becomes His nourishment . . . " The sentence goes on for dozens of more words. This material will never be comprehensible to large numbers of people in its current form, and it is thus hard to see this approach as a breakthrough to a "universal" or "inclusive" pedagogy or spirituality.

Towards the end of the book, the author speculates on the long-term prospects for Beshara, which has now survived for more than forty years, albeit as a small and - I daresay - an elitist group. (By "elitist" I do not imply an attitude of snobbery, merely that the study materials, along with the other requirements imposed on students - make it unlikely that the Beshara approach will ever be accessible to more than a very small percentage of society.) Nonetheless, citing various sociological criteria applicable to religious groups and cults, the author remains optimistic about Beshara's survival. But (say I) when fewer than half of the children of Beshara students show an interest in following in their parents' footsteps, have we in fact discovered the claimed "universal" approach to spirituality?

This raises a question about New Age spirituality in general. The original New Agers were reacting to perceived flaws in the Christian, Jewish, or secular heritage that they had inherited. But the new generation does not have much to slough off - their parents already did it. I have noticed the aging of attendees at New Age events. Maybe New Age spirituality will fare no better than Christianity and Judaism did with an earlier generation, and the millennial generation will perhaps abandon religion entirely, focusing on pop culture or politics for whatever meaning they can scratch from the soil of life. How many of the millennials - plugged into their I-phones and tablets and tweeting one another about the latest celebrity scandal - give more than a passing thought to spirituality, much less to the Unity of Being?

Several times throughout the book, the author contrasts the optimism of the Beshara school with the pessimism of the Traditionalist or Perennial Philosophy school. I'm afraid that my sympathies are with the pessimists.

This is a very well researched book that gives an historical and critical account of a spiritual movement's evolution.
The title, however, is somewhat misleading for the people there would not regard themselves as Sufis, even though the
Ibn 'Arabi's thought permeates a lot of the study about the Oneness of Being. For anyone who has taken courses at Beshara,
or for those contemplating it, or for those curious about esoteric education and the legacy of Ibn 'Arabi, this book may provide
an interesting and invaluable insight into a modern spiritual movement dedicated to the good news for this era.

This book covers teeth replacement options whether it is bridges, dentures or implants. Of course, dental implants is the preferred way to go for comfortable lasting results. It is well written with a lot of good information. However, there are many "typos". It leaves the impression that it was dictated into a speech to text program and then not proof read. If you can wade throught the typos, it is quite informative.

John Dixon Hunt is Professor of the History and Theory of Landscape, Emeritus, at the University of Pennsylvania and Editor of the journal, Studies in the History of Gardens and Designed Landscapes. He is the author of many works including The Venetian City Garden: Place, Typology and Perception, Nature Over Again: The Garde Art of Ian Hamilton Finlay and The Afterlife of Gardens.
