Great book.

I went thru many sections on the net, trying to find a book in English to use in learning how to play the Erhu. I never found one, til this came along. I am glad I went to Amazon that day. This book not only teaches you how to play, it teaches you how to string your Erhu, how to bow, how to wax th bow, how the bow fits on your Erhu, how to hold the Erhu, and how to position your hands and arms for playing the Erhu. I was so delighted to finally find, not only a great book in English, but one that teaches everything. It even has songs to learn to play. It is fantastic. I would advise everyone wanting to play the Erhu to read this book.

Highly readable and recommended for students studying non-Western music since it is the first book I've found written in English for non-Chinese. Carefully reeearched but sometimes dull biography

This is a 1975 work reissued in 1992. The early part of the book is very dull, discussing at length books Hoover wrote in the 1920s on subjects no longer of much interest. The account of his life and of his time as Secretary of Commerce is of more interest. He was very aggressive in pushing his ideas when he was in the Cabinet. When Coolidge made his cryptic announcement that he did not choose to run, Hoover asked what it meant but Cooldge gave no meaningful response so Hoover set out to claim the nomination and succeeded. (Coolidge later groused that he had Hoover trying to foist advice on him for six years, all pf it bad.) This book downplays the significance of the anti-Catholic campaign in 1928 and says Hoover won because the times were good. The book though saying what good things it can about Hoover also says what he did wrong and how he failed. I read the David Bruner biography of Hoover on Mar 5, 2006, and it is better reading than is this book, though this book is probably researched in greater depth than was the Bruner book

Forgotten Book

Joan Hoff Wilson's book attempts to explain the life of Herbert Hoover. From what Wilson says, at the time of the book's writing many new reports and papers on Herbert Hoover were being released. Wilson states that he believed the time to be right to reexamine Hoover now that several decades have passed after the public vilified him following 1929-1932. By publishing this book and other new information being released Wilson et al. hoped that historians would look at Hoover's record again and readjust his status in society. (He published this book in 1975).

To me Wilson wrote the book in an unorganized and jumbled manner. If you are using this book as a source of research you will find some interesting points and quotes that illustrate what he was like. However, a huge problem with this is that the author does not do any sort of internal citation and instead clumps his information all at the end of the book. This makes it nearly impossible to find where a particular fact came from concerning one of Wilson's sources. The book isn't really a biography of Hoover but instead an analysis of the man based off of copious research and newly issued papers. It discusses very little about his private life and instead talks about his public record. Even then, it talks more about how he went about doing things rather than what he actually did. When reading this book you are left wondering what the author tried to say about the man.

Joan Hoff Wilson was one of the first revisionist historians to attempt a rehabilitation of Hoover's image. Using previously unavailable sources from the Hoover Presidential Library, Wilson delivers a comprehensive account of Hoover the man - not just Hoover the president. Wilson's main argument is that Hoover's Quaker morals underpinned all his actions as both an engineer and as president. From this vantage point, it is easier to understand the path of decisions that led Hoover to delayed action during the Great Depression and established his strong negative reputation among historians. The book itself, while conceptualized well, is executed poorly as overbearing jargon and relentless use of the passive voice muddle the early sections and reduce overall specificity. Don't try to read this in one setting.

Excellent book

This book is excellent. It's apparent that the last reviewer made a mistake by giving this book only one star.

I first heard of Chinelo Bally from watching recordings of the "Great British Sewing Bee" season 2 on Youtube. Unfortunately almost all of the episodes have been deleted but you can still find them online.

Anyhow, this book teaches you how to design your own clothing without a pattern. She gives a number of projects to start you off with that are based on your own measurements and preferences. For instance, you get to select the fabric, how long or short it will be, etc.

You do take a lot of measurements, but that's what helps you to get a good fit. But the real gem in the book is that it teaches you the principles of how to take a design that you have in your head and create it to fit your own body.

and while it's a great way to build a wardrobe

I'm an advanced sewer and I really wanted to give this book five stars. However, she's really showing you how to create a moulage and turn it into a garment, and while it's a great way to build a wardrobe, some of her instructions are exasperating. For example, I was looking to make the pencil skirt moulage, and while she tells you to cut on the side seam line, she doesn't tell you what she's using as a seam allowance. There's mention made of a sa in the actual skirt construction, but unless you know what you're doing it's confusing. She also doesn't tell you whether she's factoring ease in the moulage, or in the skirt.

I love Chinelo. She was one of my favorite contestants out of all the GBSB series and I was really rooting for her to win. I just wish she'd been a little more clear in the way she lays this book out so someone trying her technique isn't sorting through pages for basic information or making a moulage that leaves out some important measurements.

Couture technique overview

I really like this book. This technique is what I'd call a "trade" method of producing clothing - if you are a tailor or seamstress who has random customers walking in your shop and telling you they need a dress for tonight, this is how you get it done. Many places in the world get all their clothes done this way. I think this is a fantastic method to stretch an experienced sewist's skill set or an adventurous beginner to start out with. I only gave 4 stars because I think you will need other books as reference along with this one, like a flat pattern reference and a sewing reference.

This was exactly what I wanted, a bit more than I was expecting. I previewed an older version from the Public Library, so I knew what was coming. The previous, apparently hand drawn to print Presidential relationship charts had been nicely upgraded into regular print flowcharts. Good bibliography citing sources. Anyone who thinks they are related to a president can search the name index for a possible connection. I have found six presidential (distant) cousins so far.

This book is excellent for experienced Swing-plus-JavaFX developers who use Netbeans IDE, especially its platform framework. This book is not for developers who have little of knowledge on JavaFX but want to learn JavaFX. For them, it simply wastes money. This book pointed out the most important patterns or techniques used in implementation of Netbeans-Platform-based applications. It really helped me about how to integrate JavaFX techs and Swing-based NB-Platform so as to have merits of both worlds.

This book is definitively helpful for experienced architects or developers who works on Netbeans-platform-based Java application powered by JavaFX techs.

The only one thing I "complained" is this book wasted some space on instructions how to, step-by-step, create a java project, class, insert methods, etc. Since the audience is not beginners but experienced, why did authors bother explaining such tedious basic details on NB-IDE.

My comments are based on my reading experiences in the past 2 days: I did read my interested points, roughly 25% of this book, in very details and I just quickly scan the others.

That's why I gave 4 stars but not five stars

Not a great book for learning JavaFX

This book is for those who has been working with Java GUI with Swing and would like to enhance with JavaFx. If you are new and want to work on Java GUI, don't get this book since you can have your work done with JavaFx without Swing. Why bother learning Swing now?

Yes. However, Swing will remain part of the Java SE specification for the foreseeable future, and therefore included in the JRE. While we recommend developers to leverage JavaFX APIs as much as possible when building new applications, it is possible to extend a Swing application with JavaFX, allowing for a smoother transition.
