Zhongxian Wu's latest book, Chinese Shamanic Cosmic Orbit Qigong, successfully continues his previous explorations of the highly secret shamanic tradition of self-cultivation as practiced on Mt. Emei in Sichuan. About the Author
Master Zhongxian Wu is the lineage holder of four different schools of Qigong and martial arts. He was Director of the Shaanxi Province Association for Somatic Science and the Shaanxi Association for the Research of Daoist Nourishing Life Practices. Having studied in China with Daoist Priests; I really enjoyed reading this book, it appears to be authentic. I especially appreciate the details given in a manner that is not confusing.
This will be a nice conversation with my teacher; when I visit China, again.

For Advanced Practitioners Only

Master Zhongxian Wu somewhat undermines his purpose when he states that no one should really try to practice Qigong from a DVD or a book. In his introduction to CHINESE SHAMANIC COSMIC ORBIT QIGONG, he writes, "Please be aware that the layers of wisdom and knowledge that come through your Qigong practice can simply not be learned through books and DVD alone... You will feel it is easier to merge the principles of your Qigong practice into your life and to feel its powerful effects if you have the support of an experienced teacher to guide you."
Meaning? As this is an "esoteric" form of Qigong that builds on earlier books by Wu, it is advanced and will be of little use if you do not already have practice and a teacher in your life. That said, let's look at what the book covers. The chapters are as follows: 1. Generating Your Vitality, 2. Connecting with the Earth, 3. Communicating with the Heavens, 4. Resonating with the Dao, 5. Merging with the Universe, 6. Embracing Infinity, 7. Returning to Your Root, 8. Cultivating Your Gratitude, 9. Uplifting Your Spirits, 10. Brightening Your Body, 11. Awakening Your Inner Wisdom, and (my favorite), 12. Enjoying the Action-less.
Each short chapter is divided into the following sections: Meaning, Movement, Visualization, Breathing, and Benefit. Finally, a drawing of a man performing the movement is provided in each case, though the artwork is so basic that it more gives you the idea than provides fine visual details (again, OK if you have a mentor).
Discounting the introduction and the appendix, this volume weighs in at 75 pp. If you are a fan of Master Wu and have great experience with Qigong, this may be something new and highly desirable. Check with your teacher first, however. Master Wu states that, for best results, one relies on the other.

Quick read, lifetime practice!

This little book, Chinese Shamanic Cosmic Orbit Qigong, by Zhongxian Wu, is an excellent source of information detailing the Chinese Shamanic Cosmic Orbit form of Qigong, meditation, mantras (chants/sounds), mudras (movements/positions) for healing and self cultivation. Wu's Qigong is the blending of what he's learned and studied over decades, and the author is very thorough in his explanation of everything. Wu's writing is almost poetic and conveys his love of what he lives and teaches. It was a joy to read initially, and I continually refer back to the book to deepen my practice and understanding while looking for a teacher who is knowledgeable about this form of Qigong.
There's an emmense amount of information in this little book which is not much over 100 pages. The author is sure to give the Chinese meaning and symbol for each word which holds particular significance. There are often layers of meaning in the words which can be quite complex. Wu gives the historical meaning and relevance of his teaching and writing.
Wu emphasizes that it is of particular importance to find a knowledgeable teacher with which to work because their are centuries of development in Qigong. He states that there are now thousands of forms of Qigong - some more western and far removed from the roots of Qigong.
The author states that, although you might start your Qigong practice using a DVD or a book, it's impossible to have a truly authentic Qigong practice in this way. If you're interested in practicing Qigong it's important to learn about the various forms, and find a form which appeals to you & which is authentic. Then find a teacher who fully understands the layers of meaning and roots of Chinese culture.
Wu has packed this little gem full of information, and he's incredibly clear about every detail - from how the body must be positioned - from straightening your back and pulling your shoulders back - while relaxing the arms, placing the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth just behind the front teeth with your mouth closed & teeth together, right down to explaining importance of lifting the perineum and pulling in the belly. I love the short portion on visualization.. that's my area of particular interest, and Wu's writing on the breath and visualization are lovely .. detailed and poetic in description. Every detail has significance - which is why I think this isn't really for the beginner.
The author has a long lineage in the Eastern Arts - healing, meditaion, chant, using the various forms outlined in the book. Qigong is about cultivating life's energy (Qi, Chi, other words for the force inside of us that connects us to the Universal Life Force) Chinese Shamanic Cosmic Orbit Qigong isn't really a book for the beginner, it's for those who are at least somewhat familiar with the Eastern arts, ying and yang, energies and energy imbalances in nature and in our bodies. of mantras, mudras, meditation, qigong, etc... but it doesn't take long to learn these things if one is motivated. I've been doing meditation for most of my life and you don't need any of this for meditaion, but along the way I've picked info up. I would guess most people do the same - like any subject in which you're interested...you just tend to continue to learn, and when there are subjects on the periphery, if there's an interest, you learn those as well.
The author wrote the book at the request of his students - & it's understandable why. His format is very clear and easy to follow. The author has distilled an abundance of knowledge into a little gem of a book which for many will become the foundation of their practice. The book is short because the author doesn't add any extraneous nonsense - he gives a very interesting history, then gets right down to the information one needs to practice using this format.
Chinese Shamanic Cosmic Orbit Qigong is a book which teaches a lifelong practice. If you're motivated to learn a practice... taking the time out of each day to quiet your mind, bring inner peace and clarity, to better yourself then this will be a book worth reading.
