Top-Notch translation

I am an avid reader of mythologies around the worlds. I found that The Mahabhrata together with The Ramayana are the most sophisticated of them out there.

I know sanskrit, and I have read it both in Sanskrit and Bengali(my native language). Despite the antiquity, it matches any modern science fiction and fantasy tell. Blood and gore is way more than any average horror film. There is a good amount of sex too. The battle is truly epic, any weapon you can imagine(from sword to nuke, which can be discharged just by 'uttering some words' and many more) is there. Any vehicle you can imagine(from normal horseback to mind controlled interstellar space craft, the called vimana is there). The causalities of the battle of mahabhrata alone was 40 million men, an equal number of elephants and horses just in 18 days! The number of races matches world of warcraft easily(snakes, human beings, gods, demigods, demons, and many more). There is powerful warriors capable of annihilating the world, mystics and sages more powerful than demigods and spacefaring people going from one galaxy to another in various crafts. Then there is a lot of politics and diplomacy and other side stories.

All in all, this is the book you should read no matter who you are, at least as a science fiction tell(I am a non religious person) and when you read, you should not forget that this is a tell which is thousands of years old! I wonder why hollywood is not making a film out of it!

This English translation is the best so far. It is much lucid, easy and fun to read than any other english retelling available there and I recommend, before you read, have some basic ideas about sanskrit, as you will see some there in the book and some of them are important to understand so you can relish it properly. Then I feel, the author has shortened/omitted some parts but this is not necessarily a bad thing.

“THE MAHABHARATA A Modern Rendering” by Ramesh Menon – A Review

Throughout history, the Gods have been reputed to guide the introduction of new ages in world existence, many such occasions occurring not at all smoothly for man. Some 2000 years ago, the Christian God sent his son, Jesus Christ, into the world on a similar mission. In this instance in India, the Gods send forth, on earth, emanations of themselves for the coming of a new age, kali yuga, an age portended to be more evil than the one before it, when kings and princes had become arrogant and proud and void of justice and truth.
The main protagonists are the scions of the Kuru house – the Pandavas and the Kauravas – cousins. The earth requires blood sacrifice to accommodate the coming of the Kali yuja age, and bloodletting there is of stupendous magnitude in the Mahabharata – the Great War. The sacrifice brought only the demise of kingly rule, but the wanton slaughter of the common soldier (a mystery; but then again not a mystery). Recall again that in the Christian tradition, Jesus died on the cross, a blood sacrifice for a new age, and returned to Heaven when his mission was fulfilled. In this war, millions of men die – probably akin to the Great Flood which also ended and old age.
The Mahabharata – the Book - is an epic story, a magnificent tome, a magnum opus. The original is said to be seven times the length of the Iliad and Odyssey combined, a poem of 100,000 couplets. This prose version by Ramesh Menon is abridged but still very, very long. I have never before read a book this long (1539 pages). In printed form its bulk and volume would certainly prove a major distraction, notwithstanding the interest in the content. I was able, however, to read the book it in comfort because it was on my Kindle which has become my preferred way of reading.
But the real ease in reading a book this long came from the style and simplicity, yet lucid content of the book. Of all the pages, I was never once bored . . . not at any point. I was carried away with the fortunes/misfortunes of the cousins; with the Gods and holy men who gave boons, but usually with a condition; people on pilgrimages; curses laid on people coming true; the life given to rivers and sea, and their people; religious men on pilgrimage or in long-term meditation; forest dwellers, and demons, weird animals, among others. The ups and downs of the Great War was a saga in itself. My guess is that to depict all this in cinema faithfully and in detail, Mr. Cecil B. De Mille would have been severely challenged.
The key strength of the book is in the lucidity of the words. The words and phrases themselves throw out pictures at the reader. Some books are words and pictures; in this book the pictures jump out of the words. I met new words – lambent, luculent, coruscance; chtonic, among many more. There are also many elegant phrases: “twilight and the blue sky dying in dark crimson and turquoise” (imagine the battlefield); an arrow is returned “quick as a thought”, again among many others. There are comments on various subjects of personal interest well worth pondering: religious (the Gita); greed; vice (gambling obsession); on sin (the primal cause of sin is covetousness); on death (we are all born with a mission; when the missions of Gods and men are accomplished, they die (Jesus did say “it is done”, before expiring on the cross)); on qualities of kingship (remember Machiavelli?); on the idea of balance rather than extreme zeal in one’s calling, etc.,etc.
I recommend this book highly to all who are moved by valor, momentous occasions, good writing, and a nice little twist at the end, only hinted in the first paragraph, and in the one just gone. The book gets my top marks because it is ‘just magnificent.’

Sweeping Epic

Had the pleasure of seeing 9.5-hour stage production by Peter Brooks at the Brooklyn Academy of Music 25 years ago. Read this book in a shorter older version. Loved both. Chose the Ramesh Menon modern interpretation because I enjoyed his interpretation of the Ramayana. Would have given it five stars if the translations of certain parts were clearer and less awkward.

I checked this book out from the library and had to have one for my daughters.
I found that it have everything we needed to know at a quick look. Pictures were so helpful. For a first time mom and a grandmother to learn and know the answers again,it was great.

The only book I needed

I read a few other books during my pregnancy and the baby's 1st year, but this was my favorite and I was glad to have it on my shelf as a comprehensive reference. It is complete but concise and I liked the tone in which it was written: not too clinical or judgemental sounding, but caring, helpful, and factual. It was written by multiple medical professionals specializing in pediatric medicine so I trusted the information. The way it is organized and the index are very helpful. I also really appreciated the plentiful color photographs and charts throughout. They offer some tips on sleep training that I found helpful. I wished it contained a little more detail on breastfeeding, and weaning in particular. I've also read their toddler book, which is similarly helpful. My baby's now 16 months old, and I think this book helped us start out on the right foot.

I purchased this book as a gift for a first time Mom. The book was very informative with many tips and information about caring for a new infant. I would not have thought of many of the suggestions the book contained, and believe it will be a useful tool. I sure wish they had a similar one when I had a child many years ago.

Kerry W. He has taught the history of psychology at Wellsey College and has published articles on Watson and behaviorism in the Journal of History of the Behavioral Sciences and The Social Science Encylopedia { London }.

Great book!

Mr. Buckley definetely nailed it with this book. It is fun to read, complete and rich with details. The meticulous way Kerry Buckley has to cross Watson's history of life with that of psychology gives the book a rich context, approaching what was happening at the time from various points of view. I strongly recomend it to anyone interested in learning about the biography of John Broadus Watson, the beginnings of behaviorism or general history of american psychology.

John Watson, a reappraisal

After rereading this book I realize this man predicted the blossoming of behaviorism as best way to apply psychology in education, raising children and business. Although he missed the mark with regard to raising children, he proved his right in applying classical conditioning to advertising and behavior therapy. Operant conditioning was not yet discovered (by B.F. Skinner) so we are even be more optimistic about the foreland of applied behavior analysis than Watson was. We need applied behavior analysis more than ever after the disappointing results of cognitive psychology, a relapse to introspection.

To that end, Modern ERP provides a complete but well-balanced approach to the increasingly-complex and highly-relevant topic of ERP. The book is essentially a “big picture” of ERP and provides a one-stop read for those interested in learning about business processes and the software and integrated data that makes them effective. From the history of past ERP failures and successes to the reasons why businesses deploy ERP software, this book covers relevant terminology, the ERP life cycle, ERP module essentials (including CRM and SCM), Business Process Redesign (BPR), and mapping. It addresses timing and tips for ERP software package selection and itemizes specific tasks for successful deployment, with or without the use of consultants. Interestingly, it does so without an ERP vendor-centric focus.

Excellent ERP overview with plenty of detail

This is a textbook written for undergraduate and graduate level introductory courses in ERP. For those new to ERP, the book is an excellent high level discussion of the basics of ERP, from package selection through implementation and beyond, and provides an excellent foundation for students who are involved with ERP at some level in their careers. Those with ERP experience will find the book to be a good refresher, and even seasoned professionals may glean some new tidbits of information. The book is well researched, and this edition includes discussion of current hot button issues such as cloud computing and business intelligence. The book is very well done and I highly recommend it.

Great introduction to the ERP world

I am a ERP consultant since 20 years and since this year I give classes on ERP and Information systems in a French Business School.
I was looking for a book introducing what is an ERP, what is a selection process and how to make a successful implementation of an ERP. Searching on internet I found the book of Marianne Bradford. It has been for me a fantastic help to build my different lessons. If you are in my situation I definitively recommend this book. From next year I will make the reading of this book a high recommendation to my students.

Unless it is free, I wouldn't bother reading....

This NetGalley ARC review will be brief. What you read in Pursued by the Devil’s book synopsis is pretty much all you get. Seriously, there is little reason to read this 111 page novella after reading the summary. 45% is spent talking about their chemistry/desire for one another…very crudely, 25% on her explaining why it can’t happen, 25% acting on that attraction…very explicitly, and only 5% actual plot (aka..the threats).

For this reviewer, it was a very quick, predictable read. Sure, the rich, handsome, alpha protective hero’s laser like focus on the heroine was intense. Yes, he continues to pursue her even after she pushes him away. As for the frequent references of getting in touch with his inner bear, well, folks, it sounds as weird as it was. I guess you could say that inner bear was poked/unleashed in the two minute grand finale smackdown he had with the extremely predictable villain.

My recommendation is you likely won’t want to pursue this one. In fact, consider getting the devil away from it, and find a more entertaining romantic read. Unless it is free, I wouldn’t bother.

Another steamy read from Carole Mortimer!

Pursued by The Devil is a short and sexy read. Wealthy businessman, Mikhail Lysenko, is a sexy, moody, doesn't take no for an answer, Russian bad boy, alpha male. All things I really enjoy in a hero. Mikhail has set his sights on lawyer, Lindsay Carlisle and plans to make her his as soon as possible. The only problem is that her current client is on the opposite side of a potential business deal with the wealthy and powerful Mikhail. Despite her strong attraction to Mikhail, she knows she can't afford to get involved with him. But he is both persistent and persuasive and her walls come crumbling down sooner rather than later.

I enjoyed both of these characters and the different sides they brought out in each other. Their relationship moves fast but it feels real and honest. And when Mikhail and Lindsay give in to their attraction, they heat up the pages. There is also some suspense mixed in with their sexy romance and it amplifies Mikhail's protective and possessive side. Their intense relationship only gets stronger with each hurdle and they prove to be a very good match for one another.

I've always enjoyed Carole Mortimer's writing, and her latest books, including her Alpha series and Pursued by the Devil are sexier than ever.

Okay but predictable

Pursued by the Devil (International Bad Boys} by Carole Mortimer has a capable female lawyer who tries to resist the lure of a Russian businessman. Russian billionaire Mikhail Lysenko is appealing while at the same time arrogant, overbearing and borders on being a stalker. Pursued by the Devil maybe should have been called Pursued by the Bear because of the many references to it. I’m really not sure that his behavior would be welcomed or tolerated by a confident female in reality. Lindsay Carlisle for her part did seem wishy-washy, giving him mixed signals.

The overall plot is okay but predictable. I think if I had cared about the characters more than predictable would not have mattered. For the most part that sums up my feelings, Pursued by the Devil, it is an okay read.
